Chapter 10 - THE FINAL STAND AT MAPLE LANEForty-five minutes later, my sports utility vehicle roared up the gravel driveway of the Maple Lane estate, tires screeching to a halt right behind the Seattle lawyer’s black Mercedes.

I didn't wait in the car. I threw the door open and stepped out, wearing my tailored blazer, sunglasses, and a look of cold, unmitigated fury that made the locksmith drop his drill.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" I shouted, marching straight across the gravel toward Vance Sterling Jr. and his two hired thugs.

The Seattle litigator turned around, adjusting his expensive trench coat with a smug, condescending grin.

"Ah, Mrs. Vance. Glad you could make it in time to witness the execution of your property’s transfer," the lawyer purred smoothly. "Uncle Arthur doesn't play games. This house is now under temporary receivership pending the federal debt adjudication. Step aside before we have you cited for obstruction of justice."

"You don't have a valid federal seal on that order," I snapped, stepping right up to his face. "That piece of paper is a non-binding civil notice filed without jurisdictional authority, and you know it."

The lawyer laughed, a cold, arrogant sound. "Prove it, sweetheart. By the time you get a judge to look at this on Monday, my clients will be comfortably moved in, the locks will be changed, and you’ll be sleeping in a motel."

He turned back to the locksmith. "Finish the drill."

The locksmith raised the power tool back toward my front door.

That was when the heavy iron gates at the end of the driveway swung open for the second time that month.

But this wasn't a local sheriff’s cruiser.

It was a massive, flatbed tow truck owned by the county’s largest heavy-machinery transport service, followed closely by two state trooper vehicles with their lights spinning a brilliant amber and blue.

And stepping out of the lead cruiser wasn't Lieutenant Vance.

It was the State Attorney General’s special investigator, accompanied by three senior auditors from the federal banking commission.

The Seattle lawyer’s smug grin instantly vanished. The color drained from his face as the state investigator flashed a gold badge and held out an official, crimson-stamped federal warrant.

"Vance Sterling Jr. of Seattle Bar Association, you are officially being detained for conspiracy to commit interstate fraud, filing fraudulent legal instruments, and aiding and abetting a known criminal enterprise," the investigator announced loudly, his voice echoing across the courtyard.

"This... this is an outrage! I am an officer of the court!" the Seattle lawyer stammered, stepping backward as two state troopers immediately moved in behind him, clicking handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency.

"You're an officer of a criminal syndicate," the investigator replied coldly. "We tracked the wire transfers coming from Uncle Arthur’s offshore accounts. They match the exact routing numbers used by Parker Sterling to launder stolen mortgage funds. Your entire firm is under federal audit, counselor."

The two hired thugs dropped their tools immediately, raising their hands in the air and backing away from the front door without a single word of protest.

Alana and Ellie’s grand final rescue plan had just imploded in spectacular, catastrophic fashion.
