Chapter 8 - THE JAILHOUSE COUPInside the county detention center’s maximum-security holding wing, Alana and Ellie were sharing a concrete cell that smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale desperation.

The glamorous illusions they had lived under—pretending to be upper-class socialites funding their lifestyles through Parker’s criminal enterprise—had completely shattered. Without Parker’s illicit income, their credit cards were blocked, their luxury cars were repossessed by the banks, and their society friends had conveniently blocked their phone numbers.

"This is all Parker's fault!" Ellie hissed, pacing back and forth across the six-by-eight-foot cell, her hair matted and her designer tracksuit stained with jail-issued soup. "If he hadn't married that ungrateful bitch Clarissa, we wouldn't be sitting in a cage eating mystery meat!"

"Shut your ungrateful mouth, Eleanor!" Alana snapped, sitting rigidly on the metal bunk, clutching her cheap institutional blanket around her shoulders like a queen wrapped in rags. "We just need to play our final hand. The prison chaplain visits tomorrow. He has an outside phone line."

Ellie stopped pacing, her eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"Parker’s uncle—my brother Arthur—lives out in the Pacific Northwest," Alana whispered, a cunning, desperate glint appearing in her aged eyes. "Arthur is a retired maritime lawyer. He doesn't know about the criminal charges yet. He only knows that his favorite nephew and his poor old sister have been 'wrongfully imprisoned' by a malicious, vindictive gold-digger."

Alana smiled a thin, vicious smile.

"We tell Arthur that Clarissa kidnapped Parker, forged financial documents to frame our family, and is holding our ancestral home hostage. Arthur has millions in offshore liquid assets. If we get him to fund our defense and file an emergency counter-suit in federal court, we can tie Clarissa up in legal fees so massive she’ll have to sell the estate just to pay her own lawyers."

It was a classic narcissist maneuver: when you are caught red-handed committing a crime, play the victim, weaponize family loyalty, and drag innocent people into your web of lies.

The next morning, using the chaplain’s supervised phone, Alana placed a collect call to Uncle Arthur.

And true to their toxic form, they spun a fairy tale so convincing, and so full of manufactured outrage, that Uncle Arthur actually took the bait.

Within forty-eight hours, a high-powered defense team from Seattle—led by a notoriously ruthless corporate litigator named Vance Sterling Jr.—filed a multi-million-dollar civil interference and defamation lawsuit against me, demanding an immediate freeze on all my personal assets and emergency visitation rights to my house.

The legal machinery was grinding to life once more, aiming to crush me under the sheer weight of fabricated debt and relentless litigation.
