Chapter 11 - THE NEW DAWNThree months later, the gavel finally came down for the last time.

Parker Sterling was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for mortgage fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy. His mother, Alana, and sister, Ellie, received robust prison sentences of their own for their roles in the elder-abuse and financial extortion ring.
Uncle Arthur’s offshore accounts were frozen and partially seized by the federal government to pay restitution to the elderly victims Parker and his family had defrauded.
And as for me?
The estate on Maple Lane was officially certified under my sole, unassailable name, free of every single fraudulent lien, mortgage, and claim. The title was as clean as glass.
It was a crisp, sunlit Saturday morning.
I stood on the front porch, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching Dustin run across the green lawn, chasing our golden retriever, Buster, as soccer balls and laughter filled the air.
No one was sitting in the corner. No one was eating a cold, unseasoned potato. No one was ever going to make my son feel like he didn't belong in his own home again.
Dustin suddenly stopped running, picked up a shiny silver ball from the grass, and sprinted back toward the porch, his face flushed with joy and excitement.
"Mom! Look! I scored a goal!" he shouted, leaping up the steps into my open arms.
May you like
I scooped him up, burying my face in his neck, breathing in the scent of sunshine and childhood.
"You didn't just score a goal, buddy," I whispered, looking out past the iron gates toward the bright, wide-open road ahead. "You won the whole game."
