CHAPTER 9 — "The Most Trusted Man in the Mansion Had Been Betraying Everyone for Twenty Years."

The room fell into stunned silence.

My hands refused to let go of the letter.

Victor stepped closer.

"Emily..."

"Who was the name?"

I swallowed hard.

Then slowly turned the paper around.

Every face in the room froze.

The name written in my father-in-law's unmistakable handwriting was:

Thomas Reed.

Daniel's longtime family attorney.

The same man who had comforted Margaret during the investigation.

The same man who had congratulated us after the ceremony.

The same man who had quietly stood beside the Harrington family for more than two decades.

"No..." Daniel whispered.

"Not Thomas."

Victor immediately grabbed his phone.

"Lock every exit."

But a security guard ran into the library only seconds later.

"Sir!"

"He's gone."

"When?"

"About ten minutes ago."

Victor slammed his fist onto the table.

"He knew we were getting close."

The detective picked up the brass key that had been hidden inside my wedding dress.

"What does this open?"

I searched through the final pages of my father-in-law's letter.

Then I found it.

"The blue key opens Safe Deposit Box 314 at First National Bank. Everything you need to expose the truth is inside."

By sunrise, we were standing inside the bank's secure vault.

The manager unlocked Box 314 and stepped away.

Inside were three items.

A thick folder.

A portable hard drive.

And an old cassette recorder.

Daniel pressed the Play button.

His late grandfather's voice filled the tiny room.

"If you're listening to this... Thomas has already betrayed us."

Daniel closed his eyes.

His grandfather continued.

"I hired Thomas because I trusted him like a brother."

"But years ago, I discovered he had been secretly working with Claire Benson."

The recording explained everything.

Thomas had manipulated contracts.

Hidden company losses.

Forged signatures.

And quietly stolen millions over the years without anyone noticing.

Margaret had committed serious mistakes...

But Thomas had made sure every suspicion pointed toward her.

She had been arrogant.

Cruel.

Controlling.

But she had also been used.

Then the recording reached its final sentence.

"I've already given the authorities enough evidence to stop Thomas..."

A pause.

"...if they reach this recording before he reaches the offshore account."

Victor looked at his watch.

"The account."

"The transfer!"

The detectives immediately contacted international banking authorities.

Minutes later, Victor's phone rang.

He answered.

Then smiled for the first time all night.

"We found him."

Thomas had been arrested at a private marina while trying to board a yacht with Claire.

But as officers searched his luggage...

They found something no one had expected.

A second passport.

Multiple identities.

And documents proving this conspiracy had begun nearly twenty-five years earlier.

Everything we believed was only the beginning.
