Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Blood MoneyThe hospital room spun. The rhythmic beep of my heart monitor spiked into an erratic, frantic frantic rhythm. Clara rushed into the room, her eyes wide with concern, but I waved her off with a shaking hand.

"Daniel... tell me you're mistaken," I choked out, tears finally burning the corners of my eyes. "Tell me my sister didn't... she couldn't..."
"The paper trail doesn't lie, Elena," Daniel said, pulling out a flow chart detailing bank account numbers, shell corporations, and offshore routing routing numbers. "When Julian died last year, his personal life insurance policy paid out three million dollars directly into your personal account. But what you didn't know—because you were drowning in grief—was that Julian had a secondary corporate policy tied to his tech startup. A ten-million-dollar policy."
"Who was the beneficiary?" I demanded, my chest heaving against the agonizing pressure of my cracked ribs.
"It was structured under a trust," Daniel explained. "A trust where your father, Arthur, was named as the secondary trustee in the event that you were incapacitated or deceased."
The horror settled into my bone marrow.
It all made terrifying, crystal-clear sense.
A year ago, Julian died in a mysterious single-car accident. I was left a grieving widow with newborn twins. My family swooped in, playing the role of grieving, supportive relatives while pushing me to sign dozens of "financial management" documents while I was heavy on postpartum depression medication. I had unknowingly handed over control of secondary assets, while financing their lavish lifestyle out of my own hard-earned corporate holdings.
And tonight... tonight’s crash wasn't an accident either.
"The semi-truck," I whispered, horror choking my throat. "The truck that hit my car today..."
"We're already investigating the driver," Daniel said grimly. "He fled the scene, but local police just found the rig abandoned three miles down the highway. The registration leads back to a logistics company owned by a man named Victor Vance—your father’s former business partner."
Before I could digest the crushing weight of Daniel's words, loud, chaotic screaming erupted from the hallway outside my room.
"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!"
The heavy doors swung open with a bang. Loretta pushed past two frantic hospital security guards, her designer mascara smeared, her face contorted with rage. Behind her stood my father, Arthur, his jaw set in a cold, murderous scowl, and my sister, Seraphina, sobbing dramatically into a silk scarf.
"Elena!" Arthur roared, stepping into the room like an angry tyrant. "What is the meaning of this illegal stunt?! You cut off our access! You canceled our cards! Seraphina was pulled out of her car by repo men in front of her friends!"
"Get them out of here," Daniel ordered the security guards firmly.
"Touch me and I’ll sue this dump into the ground!" Loretta shrieked, marching straight to the side of my bed. She leaned over me, her breath smelling of expensive wine and fake sympathy. "You ungrateful bitch! After everything we sacrificed for you! You get into a little fender bender and decide to destroy this family?!"
I stared at her, my vision clear, the fog of filial duty completely evaporating.
"A little fender bender?" I said, my voice dangerously low. "I have a shattered pelvis, Arthur has a debt he can't pay, and my children almost died."
"They didn't die!" Seraphina screamed, stepping forward, her eyes wild. "They're fine! But my reputation is ruined! My landlord locked my boutique! Do you know how much inventory is in there?!"
"It's over," I said softly.
Arthur stepped closer, his shadow falling dark over my bed. "Listen to me, Elena. You will call your lawyer right now and undo this insanity. You owe us. If it wasn't for us, you would have lost Julian's entire estate last year when he... passed away."
"When he was murdered?" I asked coldly.
Arthur’s face instantly drained of color. His eyes darted to Daniel, then back to me.
"What... what nonsense are you talking about?" Arthur stuttered, his powerful posture suddenly faltering.
"I know about the wire transfer, Dad," I said, leaning forward despite the blinding agony in my back. "I know about the fifty thousand dollars from Seraphina's account. And I know about Victor Vance."
Loretta gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. Seraphina froze, her theatrical tears drying up instantly.
"You... you don't know what you're talking about," Arthur hissed, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper. "You're delirious on pain meds. You're unhinged."
"Am I?" I pulled the red folder from Daniel's hand and held it up. "The police are reviewing these documents right now. By sunrise, the district attorney will have them."
Arthur’s eyes turned pitch black with malice. He didn't look like a father anymore; he looked like a predator backed into a corner.

"You think you're so smart, Elena," Arthur whispered, bending down so close I could smell the stale tobacco on his coat. "You think you own everything. But you forgot one simple detail... Julian left behind more than just a company. He left behind a secret."
HOOK: Arthur leaned in and whispered six words that turned my entire world upside down: "The twins aren't Julian's... they're his."
