Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in CourtForty-eight hours later.

I refused to wait in that hospital bed. Against the furious protests of my chief orthopedic surgeon, I demanded to be loaded into a specialized medical wheelchair, equipped with spine supports and pain-medication pumps. Clad in a crisp, tailored black suit over my back brace, with my hair pulled back into a slick, powerful knot, I entered the Federal District Courthouse.

The hallway was a zoo of journalists, flashing cameras, and shouting reporters.

"Mrs. Vance! Is it true your father tried to have you killed?!" "Elena! Are the financial fraud charges against Vance Global Holdings being dropped?!"

I ignored them all, my eyes fixed straight ahead as Daniel wheeled me into the high-security courtroom.

Inside, sitting at the defense tables in bright orange prison jumpsuits and heavy handcuffs, were Arthur Vance, Seraphina, and Marcus Vance.

Loretta sat in the row behind them, dressed in cheap sweatpants she had likely bought from a gas station after being thrown out of her mansion in the middle of the night. Her hair was unwashed, her eyes sunken and red from crying. She looked like a ghost of her former, arrogant self.

When Loretta saw me enter, she leaped to her feet, clutching the wooden barrier. "Elena! Baby! Please! Tell them to let me go! I’m your mother! I didn't know what Arthur was doing! I swear on my life I didn't know!"

I didn't even turn my head to look at her. I passed her as if she were made of air.

The judge slammed his gavel. "Order in the court! Sit down, Mrs. Vance!"

Arthur turned his head, staring at me with hollow, defeated eyes. The arrogant tyrant was gone; in his place was a broken old man facing forty years in federal prison.

"Elena," Arthur rasped, his voice trembling through the heavy courtroom silence. "Please... you don't have to do this. I'm your father."

"You lost the right to call yourself my father the moment you put my children in that car, Arthur," I said, my voice echoing off the high marble walls of the courtroom like a death sentence.

The federal prosecutor stepped forward. "Your Honor, the government presents state’s evidence item 4B: the recorded confession of Arthur Vance, as well as forensic autopsy reports retrieved from the secondary investigation into Julian Vance’s death."

Marcus Vance sat completely rigid, his lawyer whispering frantically into his ear.

"Proceed, Prosecutor," the judge ordered.

The prosecutor pressed play on an audio recorder connected to the court’s sound system.

Arthur’s recorded voice filled the room, raspy and pathetic: “It was Marcus... Marcus threatened to expose my illegal gambling debts if I didn't help him take over Julian’s software. Julian found out... he came to my house. He told me he was going to report us to the SEC. We couldn't let him do that...”

Loretta gasped, dropping her head into her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

“So Marcus paid the mechanic,” Arthur’s voice continued on the recording. “But Julian... Julian didn't die in the crash immediately. He survived the impact. When the paramedics arrived... Marcus was already there posing as a bystander. Marcus swapped Julian’s oxygen mask with an empty canister in the ambulance...”

A collective gasp echoed across the entire courtroom.

I felt a cold shockwave hit my chest. Julian hadn't died from the crash mechanics. He had been murdered in cold blood right inside the emergency vehicle by Marcus Vance.

Marcus snapped. He slammed his handcuffed hands onto the desk, screaming at Arthur. "You senile old fool! You lied! You signed the deal!"

"Order! Security, restrain the defendant!" the judge yelled, slamming his gavel repeatedly.

Four bailiffs tackled Marcus to the floor as he fought wildly, his composure entirely gone.

I sat in my wheelchair, tears quietly slipping down my cheeks, holding tight to a small silver locket around my neck that contained Julian’s picture. The truth was finally out. The monstrous darkness that had destroyed my life was laid bare before the entire world.

The judge cleared his throat, looking at the defendants with utter disgust.

"In light of the overwhelming evidence of conspiracy to commit murder, high-level corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice," the judge announced sternly, "bail is denied for all defendants. Trial will commence immediately, and the court places all assets associated with the defendants into a permanent receivership under the control of Elena Vance."

As the guards dragged Marcus, Arthur, and Seraphina toward the side exit, Seraphina turned to me, weeping hysterically. "Elena! Please! Don't let them take me! I'm your sister!"

I looked at her, my expression completely stone cold.

"I don't have a sister," I said clearly.

HOOK: As the court cleared out, Daniel received an urgent notification from the hospital's genetic laboratory regarding the pending DNA results for the twins. He looked at the paper, his jaw dropping in absolute shock.
