Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

In the days that followed the dramatic arrests at the Pierce estate, the story blew up into a national media firestorm. Headlines across the globe dominated the news cycle: SONOMA WINE DYNASTY CRUMBLES, THE LIVING DEAD: ARTHUR PIERCE RETURNS FROM THE GRAVE, and THE FALSE CASKET CONSPIRACY.
Grant Pierce, facing twenty-five years in federal prison for attempted murder and multi-million-dollar financial fraud, broke down completely during his interrogation. To save himself from maximum sentencing, he turned state’s evidence against his mother, laying out the entire web of corruption that had plagued Pierce & Vale Vineyards for over a decade.
Dr. Richard Vance’s medical license was permanently revoked, and Saint Jude’s Women’s Clinic was shut down by federal authorities pending a massive human rights and medical malpractice investigation.
Two weeks after the night of the storm, Nathaniel sat in the executive office of the vineyard, looking out over the rolling green hills of Sonoma Valley. The morning sun broke through the golden fog, illuminating the ripe grapes hanging heavy on the vines.
The door to the office opened softly. Maribel walked in, wearing a warm cream sweater, carrying their two-week-old son in a front carrier. He was healthy, thriving, and gaining weight every day.
"How are the numbers looking?" Maribel asked softly, walking up behind Nathaniel and placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"The forensic accountants finished the audit yesterday," Nathaniel replied, turning his chair around and smiling as he gently stroked his son’s cheek. "Vivian and Grant had drained almost twelve million dollars through shell companies in Panama and the Caymans. But because Father kept detailed copies of the original trust deeds in a safe deposit box in Zurich, the federal court has frozen all stolen assets. We're going to recover almost everything."
"And the vineyard?" she asked.
"The board unanimously voted this morning," Nathaniel said, taking Maribel’s hand in his. "They terminated Vivian and Grant’s voting rights permanently. They offered the Chairman position to my father, but... he declined."
Maribel raised an eyebrow. "Arthur declined?"
"He said he spent seven years being a ghost, and he intends to spend the rest of his life actually living," Nathaniel smiled faintly. "He’s moving to a quiet villa in Florence next month. He wants us to come visit in the spring."
"So who is running Pierce & Vale?" Maribel asked softly, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
Nathaniel pulled a newly printed document from his desk and slid it across to her.
It was the new corporate charter for the estate. At the top, in dark navy ink, was the new name of the business: MARIBEL & PIERCE ESTATES.
Underneath, listed as Co-Chief Executive Officers, were the names Nathaniel Pierce and Maribel Pierce.
"We're making it a joint partnership," Nathaniel said, looking deeply into her eyes. "No more secrets. No more hidden trusts. No more lies. Fifty-fifty, built on absolute trust."
Tears glistened in Maribel’s eyes as she leaned down and kissed him deeply. "I love you, Nathaniel."
"I love you, Maribel. Both of you."

For the first time in months, a sense of deep, absolute peace settled over the estate. The dark clouds that had hung over the Pierce family for generations had finally cleared, leaving behind a clear sky and a fresh start.
Or so they thought.
