CHAPTER 6 — The Will They Never Knew About
Three months later, Emily received a letter from a law office.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw the name printed at the top.
Margaret Carter.
Her grandmother.
The only person who had ever treated Emily like she mattered.
Margaret had died when Emily was nineteen.
Or so everyone believed.
The lawyer sat across from Emily in a quiet office and placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“Your grandmother left this for you.”
Emily opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My sweet Emily,
I watched them choose your brother again and again.
I watched you become strong because no one gave you the choice to be soft.
So I made a choice too.
Everything I owned was placed in trust for you.
Emily stopped breathing.
The lawyer continued.
“Your grandmother owned land your family never knew about. It was sold last year.”
“How much?” Emily whispered.
The lawyer slid a document across the desk.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
$12.4 million.
But the final line of the letter broke her completely.
This money is not revenge.
It is proof.
You were never the forgotten child.
You were the one worth protecting.
Emily walked out of that office richer than she had ever imagined.
But instead of buying a mansion…
She paid off her parents’ house.
Quietly.
Without telling them.
Then she moved three states away and opened a foundation for children from broken families.
Years later, her parents received one final note from her.
I forgive you.
