CHAPTER 8 — The Secret Their Mother Buried

Emily carefully unfolded the yellowed letter.
It wasn't addressed to her.
It was addressed to her parents.
"If you are reading this..."
"You have already failed one of your children."
Emily looked up.
Neither parent had ever mentioned this letter.
She continued reading.
"When Emily was born, doctors believed she would never survive her first year because of a rare heart condition."
Emily stopped breathing.
She had never known.
"For nearly twelve months, every member of this family revolved around saving her life."
"Daniel was only three years old."
"He watched strangers hold his baby sister while his parents disappeared into hospitals."
"One day he asked me if Mommy still loved him."
Emily's hands began to shake.
The next paragraph hurt even more.
"After Emily recovered, your guilt consumed you."
"Instead of loving both children equally..."
"You overcompensated."
"Every 'yes' to Daniel became an apology for the year he felt invisible."
"Every 'no' to Emily became a sacrifice you expected her to understand."
"You never noticed the balance had completely reversed."
Tears rolled silently down Emily's face.
The lawyer had been right.
Their family hadn't been destroyed overnight.
It had been falling apart for thirty years.
One decision...
Repeated thousands of times.
Daniel whispered,
"I didn't remember any of it."
"The prison therapist helped me recover those memories."
"I hated you..."
"...because I thought you stole our parents."
Emily looked at him.
"And then?"
"I realized..."
"You were just a baby."
Neither of them spoke.
For the first time since childhood...
Brother and sister cried together.
Not because one had won.
But because both had lost.
Yet neither of them knew...
May you like
Their parents had been hiding one final secret.
One that would completely rewrite the Carter family's history.
