Chapter 1

"I fell down the stairs," Elena said in a voice so calm it sent chills down everyone's spine.
The nurse at the General Hospital in Mexico City looked at her with obvious suspicion. Sixteen-year-old Camila clutched her broken arm, struggling not to pass out from the searing pain. Her lip was split, her left eye was swollen shut, and deep purple bruises circled her neck—injuries that clearly did not match the story of a simple fall. Elena, her own mother, smiled casually, as though she were explaining away the clumsiness of an accident-prone teenager.
"She's very absent-minded," Elena added, adjusting her vest. "She's always bumping into things. You know how teenagers are these days."
Camila didn't say a single word. Not because the pain made it impossible, but because Arturo had taught her through terror that speaking came with a terrible price.
Arturo wasn't her father.
He was her stepfather.
To the neighbors in their community, he was the picture of the perfect family man—the kind who greeted everyone at the local market, bought beers for the guys on weekends, brought home sweet bread every Sunday, and was always willing to help fix a broken water pump. People often whispered that Elena had hit the jackpot after being widowed, finding such a hardworking and dependable man.
But behind closed doors, reality was a living nightmare.
Arturo would come home reeking of beer and cement dust, wearing the crooked smile that always signaled disaster. He never needed a real reason to explode with violence.
Sometimes he beat Camila because she took two extra minutes to warm the tortillas.
Other times because the television was too loud.
Once he punished her for not answering him quickly enough.
The very next day, he beat her for daring to answer.
"You're challenging me, you little brat," he would growl before the first blow landed.
And Elena, standing silently in the kitchen doorway with her arms folded, would only whisper,
"Don't provoke him, Camila. You know how he gets."
As if a sixteen-year-old girl had the power to control the rage of a monster.
That same night, a violent storm flooded the neighborhood streets. Arturo came home soaked and furious after losing an important construction contract. He hurled his keys against the living room wall, cursed the government, his business partners, and even Camila's late father.
Then his bloodshot eyes settled on the girl, who was quietly washing dishes.
"Look at me when I walk into my house," he ordered.
Camila turned toward him—
—but not quickly enough.
His slap cracked across her face, filling her mouth with the taste of blood. Her body slammed into the kitchen sink as Arturo let out a chilling laugh.
"So... you're still standing, huh?"
Elena peeked out from the hallway.
"Arturo... that's enough."
He shot her a look of pure contempt.
"See that, Camila? Your dear mommy thinks I'm too hard on you."
Then Arturo grabbed her wrist.
Camila instinctively tried to pull away, but his grip tightened even more.
With terrifying calm, he twisted her arm.
The sickening crack echoed through the tiny kitchen like a dry tree branch snapping in half.
Camila's scream was so piercing that even Arturo froze for a brief second.
Her forearm had bent at a grotesque, impossible angle.
Elena didn't run to comfort her daughter.
She didn't scream for help.
She didn't call the neighbors.
She simply picked up her leather purse and said coldly,
"We're going to the hospital.
And you fell down the stairs."
Before leaving, Arturo leaned in until his face was inches from hers.
"Repeat it exactly like that, girl.
Or I'll break the other arm too."
What Arturo didn't know was that, for the past eight months, Camila had been documenting everything.
Audio recordings.
Photos of every bruise.
Exact dates.
Hidden videos.
Every piece of evidence had been safely backed up to a secret account shared with a lawyer she had contacted through her high school's guidance counselor.
Arturo believed he was teaching her to be silent and obedient.
In reality, he was teaching her how to gather the evidence that would one day destroy him.
When Dr. Ramírez stepped into the emergency room and examined the severe fracture, Camila's bloody lip, and the unmistakable finger-shaped bruises around her neck, his expression changed instantly.
He didn't ask a single sensitive question in front of Elena.

He simply nodded, walked quietly into the hallway with its white-tiled floors, and dialed 911.
No one could have imagined the storm that was about to unfold...
