Chapter 5 - THE VANISHING OF BAY 3

The federal safe house in the outskirts of Toluca was cold, but it was safe. Or so Camila thought.

For two weeks, Camila lived under protection. Her arm was healing slowly inside a sleek black fiberglass cast. The case against Arturo and Elena had grown into a massive federal operation. Arturo wasn't just facing domestic violence charges anymore—he was indicted for premeditated murder, money laundering, and organized crime conspiracy.

Elena, facing a life sentence without parole, had finally broken down and agreed to testify against Arturo in exchange for being placed in a medium-security facility away from the cartel's reach.

The trial was set for the following Monday. Camila was the star witness.

It was 11:45 PM on a rainy Thursday night. Camila was sitting on her bed in the safe house, reviewing her statement with Valeria.

Suddenly, the power cut out.

The room plunged into pitch-black darkness.

"Stay down," Valeria commanded instantly, pulling a glock pistol from her holster under her jacket. "The generator should kick in..."

Silence. No generator hummed.

Outside the door, the two federal guards stationed in the hallway didn't make a sound. No shouting. No radio chatter. Just... dead silence.

Thud.

The sound of a heavy body hitting the floor right outside their bedroom door made Camila’s heart leap into her throat.

"Valeria..." Camila whispered, her breath hitching.

"Behind the bed. Now," Valeria ordered, crouching near the door, her gun pointed at the brass handle.

Slowly, the door handle began to turn.

Click.

The door pushed open. A shadow stood in the doorway—tall, broad, wearing a heavy tactical raincoat. The rain outside illuminated his profile in the moonlight filtering through the window.

It wasn't a cartel hitman.

It was Dr. Ramírez. The emergency room doctor from General Hospital.

Camila gasped. "Dr. Ramírez?!"

Valeria kept her gun raised. "Don't move, Doctor! Hands where I can see them!"

Dr. Ramírez raised his hands slowly, but he wasn't holding a weapon. He was holding a satellite phone. His face was drenched in sweat, his eyes wide with sheer terror.

"Put the gun down, Valeria," Dr. Ramírez panted, his voice shaking violently. "You don't understand. They have my daughter."

"Who has your daughter?!" Valeria demanded.

"Arturo’s people," Ramírez cried, tears streaming down his face. "They kidnapped my seven-year-old girl from her school this afternoon. They told me... they told me if I don't deliver Camila to them tonight, they will send her back to me in a box!"

Camila stood up from behind the bed, her world crashing down again. "Dr. Ramírez... you were the one who saved me... you called 911..."

"And I regret it every single second!" Ramírez screamed in desperation, falling to his knees. "I tried to be a hero! I tried to do the right thing for a stranger, and now my baby girl is going to pay for it! Please, Camila... please, you have to come with me! Just speak to them! Tell them you won't testify!"

Valeria’s hands shook as she held the gun aimed at the doctor. "Doctor, step back! We can trace the call! We can send a federal team—"

"THERE IS NO TIME!" Ramírez sobbed, pulling a small remote detonator from his pocket. "They put a signal jammer on this house! The guards outside aren't dead, they're unconscious from gas! I brought a van. If Camila doesn't step into that van in three minutes, my daughter dies!"

Camila looked at the broken, desperate father kneeling before her. This was the man who had seen her neck bruises, who had quietly stepped into the hallway to risk his life for her when her own mother wouldn't.

And now, he was trapped in Arturo's web, just like she had been.

Camila stepped out from behind the bed.

"Camila, no!" Valeria yelled. "It's a trap! If you go with him, Arturo will murder you before you ever reach his daughter!"

Camila looked at Valeria, then down at her hard fiberglass cast. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object she had hidden earlier that week.

It was a tiny GPS tracker given to her by the Federal Police lead investigator—a emergency panic button disguised as a silver hair clip.

"I’m going," Camila said quietly.

"Camila, are you crazy?!" Valeria panicked.

"He saved my life," Camila said, staring into Dr. Ramírez's desperate eyes. "It's my turn to save his daughter."

Camila clipped the silver hairpin into her dark hair, walked past Valeria, and stepped out into the dark, rainy night.
