Chapter 6 - THE ARCHITECT’S BASEMENT

The floor was cold concrete, covered in a thin layer of stagnant water that smelled like rust and fuel.

Camila was tied to a heavy steel chair in the basement of an abandoned concrete manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Ecatepec. Her hands were bound behind her back with thick zip-ties, digging into her healing wrists.

Standing in front of her, holding a crowbar in one hand and a cigar in the other, was Arturo.

He was out on temporary bail—a high-priced cartel lawyer had exploited a technicality in the arrest warrant, granting him forty-eight hours of freedom before the federal trial began. Forty-eight hours was all he needed.

"Look at you," Arturo purred, blowing a thick cloud of blue smoke into Camila’s face. "The little detective. The brave little girl who thought she could put me in a cage."

Camila didn't flinch. She coughed from the smoke, keeping her head held high, staring straight into his bloodshot eyes. "Where is Dr. Ramírez's daughter?"

Arturo laughed, a dark, rumbling sound that echoed in the cavernous basement. "The doctor? Oh, he served his purpose. He delivered you right to my door. Don't worry about his kid... she’s back with her mother. Safe and sound. I’m a man of my word."

Camila let out a slow breath of relief. The girl was safe.

"Now," Arturo said, dropping his cigar onto the wet floor and crushing it under his boot. He swung the heavy crowbar, resting the cold iron tip right under Camila’s chin, forcing her to look up at him. "Let's talk about your testimony on Monday."

"I’m not dropping the charges," Camila said, her voice steady.

Arturo grinned, revealing his stained teeth. "You think you have a choice? In two hours, a boat leaves from Vera Cruz. You’re going to be on it. You’re going to spend the next ten years working in a brothel in Guatemala. And if you ever speak my name again, I won't just break your arm... I’ll find every friend you ever had in high school and burn their houses down."

He raised the crowbar, aiming it directly at her healed left shoulder.

"Starting with a little reminder of who owns you," Arturo growled.

"Wait," Camila said suddenly.

Arturo paused, his arm cocked back. "Begging now? A bit late for that, girl."

"I'm not begging," Camila said, tilting her head slightly, letting the dim yellow streetlight from the high basement window catch the metallic clip in her hair. "I’m just waiting."

Arturo frowned. "Waiting for what?"

"For the three-minute timer on my hair clip to expire," she whispered.

Before Arturo could process her words, the high glass windows of the basement shattered into a million falling shards!

CRASH!

Flashbang grenades rained down into the room, exploding with blinding white light and deafening thumps!

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

"FEDERAL POLICE! DON'T MOVE! DROP THE WEAPON!"

Armed federal tactical officers dropped down from the ceiling on ropes, laser sights cutting through the smoke, illuminating Arturo’s shocked, horrified face.

Arturo screamed, dropping the crowbar and grabbing Camila, pulling her in front of him as a human shield, aiming a revolver at her head! "STAND BACK OR I’LL BLOW HER BRAINS OUT!"

The tactical team froze, twenty red laser dots locking onto Arturo’s head and chest.

"Put the gun down, Arturo!" the tactical commander roared over the megaphone outside. "The facility is surrounded! There is no exit!"

Arturo’s breathing was frantic, his arm crushing Camila’s throat just like he had done two weeks ago in the kitchen. "I’m taking her with me! We all die tonight!"

Camila felt the cold steel of the gun barrel pressed against her temple. The same terror that had paralyzed her for three years threatened to swallow her whole.

No, she thought. Not anymore.

Using all the strength in her body, Camila slammed her hard fiberglass cast backward with full force, driving the heavy plaster right into Arturo’s broken nose!

CRACK!

Arturo shrieked in agony, his grip slipping as blood erupted from his face. He stumbled backward, dropping the revolver.

POP! POP!

Two non-lethal rubber rounds fired by the federal snipers struck Arturo squarely in the chest and knee. He collapsed into the filthy water, howling like a wounded animal.

Within seconds, officers swarmed him, pinning his limbs, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Valeria ran into the room, rushing to Camila’s side, cutting her zip-ties with a tactical knife. "Camila! Are you okay?!"

May you like

Camila stood up, rubbing her wrists. She looked down at Arturo, who was spitting blood into the puddle, his eyes filled with pure hatred as he was dragged to his feet.

"It's over, Arturo," Camila said softly. "You lose."
