Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH AT BEDROOM 404

Dr. Ramírez didn’t look back as he stepped out of the emergency room, but his fingers trembled against the screen of his phone.
"Emergency, 911. What’s your location?"
"General Hospital, ER Bay 3," Dr. Ramírez whispered, his eyes darting toward the frosted glass doors. "I have a sixteen-year-old female with a compound fracture, facial trauma, and severe strangulation marks. The mother is claiming a fall down the stairs. The pattern is consistent with physical abuse and attempted homicide. Send officers immediately. And please... hurry."
Inside the room, the air was thick enough to suffocate.
Elena paced near the edge of the examination bed, her heels clicking rhythmically against the linoleum floor. Click. Click. Click. To Camila, each strike sounded like a ticking countdown.
"Stop trembling," Elena hissed, grabbing Camila’s uninjured shoulder with a grip far tighter than necessary. "Look at me, Camila. You look guilty. When the doctor comes back, you smile. You tell him you tripped on your school bag. If you ruin this for us, Arturo will lose his temper again, and you know what happens then."
Camila stared down at her lap. Her right arm hung at an unnatural angle, throbbing with a white-hot agony that made her stomach churn. But under her coat, pressed tightly against her ribs in a hidden pocket, was her old cracked smartphone. It was recording every word.
"He broke my arm, Mom," Camila whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead fluorescent lights. "He almost killed me."
"He was stressed!" Elena snapped, her eyes wide with a frantic, desperate energy. "He works himself to the bone for this family! You pushed him to his limit with your mouth. Do you think I like this? Do you think I want to be in a hospital on a Tuesday night? We survive by keeping our heads down, Camila. That’s what women in this family do!"
Suddenly, the door swung open.
It wasn't Dr. Ramírez.
Two uniformed officers from the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security walked in, followed by a stern-looking woman in a navy suit carrying a leather briefcase.
Elena’s face drained of color. "What... what is the meaning of this? We were waiting for the surgeon."
"Ma'am, I am Officer Morales," the lead policeman said, stepping between Elena and the bed. "We received a call regarding potential physical assault involving a minor. We need you to step out into the hallway so we can speak with the patient alone."
"Assault?!" Elena’s voice cracked into a high-pitched shriek. "Are you out of your mind?! My daughter fell! She’s clumsy! Ask her! Camila, tell them!"
Camila looked up. Her swollen left eye was completely blacked out, but her right eye locked onto Officer Morales.
The room went dead silent.
Elena took a step toward the bed, reaching for Camila, but the female officer moved instantly, cutting her off. "Ma'am, step back now. Do not approach the victim."
"She’s my daughter! You can't separate us!" Elena screamed, her composure completely shattering. "Arturo! Arturo, get in here!"
Camila’s heart stopped.
Arturo was here?
The door banged open again. Standing in the doorway, drenched in rainwater and holding three paper cups of cheap hospital coffee, was Arturo. He took in the scene—the cops, the social worker, Elena’s hysteria, and Camila’s trembling frame—and his expression morphed from fake confusion to cold, murderous rage in a fraction of a second.
"What's going on here?" Arturo said, his voice dropping an octave, smooth and deep, putting on his best 'family man' façade. "Officers, is there a problem? I’m her stepfather. I brought them here."
"Sir, stay right where you are," Officer Morales commanded, placing his hand near his holster.
Arturo didn't back down. He took one step into the room, his eyes fixing on Camila with a promise of absolute ruin. "Camila... did you tell these officers something silly? You know how confused you get when you’re in pain."
It was a threat. A crystal-clear warning.
Camila felt the cold sweat running down her back. Her mind raced to the encrypted Google Drive folder on her phone—the folder containing 42 audio clips, 118 photos, and three full-length videos of Arturo’s brutality.
If I speak now, he goes to jail. But if he gets out on bail... he will kill me.
She swallowed hard, tasting blood. "I..."
"Take your time, sweetie," the social worker said softly, stepping closer to Camila and blocking Arturo’s view. "You are safe here."
Camila looked from the social worker to her mother, who was desperately mouthing the words Shut up, and then to Arturo, whose jaw was clenched so tight the muscles twitched.
Camila slowly pulled her left hand out from under her blanket. Her fingers were shaking violently. She reached into her hidden pocket, pulled out the small cracked phone, and handed it directly to Officer Morales.
"Password is 0-8-1-2," Camila said, her voice dropping the fear for the first time in eight months, ringing clear and sharp as glass. "Folder named 'STAIRS'. Watch video number 14. It was taken tonight at 8:15 PM."

Arturo’s eyes blew wide open. "You little bitch!"
He lunged forward, throwing the hot coffee across the room, straight toward Camila’s face!
