Chapter 4 - DR. VICTORIA’S FALL FROM GRACEAcross town in the exclusive medical district, Dr. Victoria Vance was scrubbing in for her third scheduled surgery of the day at the city’s premier private hospital. She adjusted her surgical cap, her mind focused entirely on the upcoming high-profile heart bypass procedure that would cement her nomination for Chief of Surgery.

The operating room doors burst open.
It wasn't a nurse. It was the Chief of Hospital Administration, flanked by two armed security guards and a state medical board investigator.
"Dr. Vance," the administrator said, his face rigid with disgust. "Step away from the scrub sink immediately. You are relieved of all surgical privileges effective immediately."
Victoria froze, a laugh bubbling up in her throat out of sheer disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? I have a quadruple bypass scheduled in five minutes! The patient is already under anesthesia! You can't—"
"We can, and we have," the investigator interrupted, stepping forward and flashing a gold badge. "Dr. Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for medical insurance fraud, unlawful embezzlement of patient trust funds, and the falsification of estate medical competency evaluations dating back eighteen years."
The sterile white lights of the scrub room seemed to spin violently around Victoria.
"This is insane!" she shrieked, dropping her sterile brush into the sink. "On what grounds?! Who authorized this?!"
"Your mother’s legal counsel, Sterling & Sterling Trust," the investigator replied, snapping steel handcuffs around Victoria’s slender wrists with practiced efficiency. "Furthermore, the state medical board has received certified bank records proving that you used embezzled funds from your late father’s medical foundation to purchase your private practice and your home—funds that were legally designated for your mother’s lifetime care trust."
Victoria was dragged out of the scrub room, past the staring eyes of her resident doctors and nursing staff. As they hauled her through the glass lobby of the hospital, she caught sight of the wall-mounted television broadcasting the morning financial news.
The headline flashed in bold red letters across the screen:
BREAKING: VANCE GLOBAL ASSETS SEIZED; MYSTERIOUS BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS MARGARET VANCE ASSUMES FULL CONTROL OF STATE BANKING SYNDICATE.
Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, ignoring the guards pulling her forward. Her eyes bulged as she stared at the screen. A picture of her mother—weary, frail, wearing the same faded cardigan she had worn when she stood outside Victoria’s gate yesterday—was displayed alongside aerial shots of Christopher’s mansion and her own private medical clinic.

"Mom..." Victoria whispered, the blood draining from her face. "How... how did she afford the lawyers? Where did she get that kind of power?"
She didn't know yet. But she was about to find out.
