Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT MEETING AT THE GRAND HOTELThe penthouse suite of the Grand Continental Hotel overlooked the glittering city skyline. The room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of crystal chandeliers.

Margaret Vance sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, draped in a midnight-blue silk shawl. Her cane rested against the armrest. Gone was the slumped posture and the defeated shuffle of a destitute widow. She sat straight, her eyes sharp, clear, and unyielding.

The heavy double doors swung open. Christopher and Victoria were shoved into the room by two private security guards. They looked like ghosts of their former selves—clothes rumpled, hair disheveled, their expensive prestige stripped away in less than twenty-four hours.

"Mom!" Victoria sobbed, throwing herself toward the chair. She tried to grab Margaret’s hands, but the guards stepped in, blocking her path. "Mom, please! Call off these monsters! They’re ruining us! They arrested me at the hospital! They took my license! Tell them it's a mistake!"

Christopher staggered behind her, his face pale and bruised from the stress. "Mom... please. We’re your children. We made a mistake, okay? Business was tough, we panicked, we thought you wouldn't understand all that legal jargon... Just drop the charges. Let’s work this out as a family."

Margaret slowly raised her hand. The room fell instantly silent.

She looked at her two eldest children—the children she had raised with love, sacrifice, and every penny her husband had earned—who had looked at her like trash when she had nowhere to go.

"As a family?" Margaret’s voice was calm, steady, and terrifyingly cold. "Is that what you called it when you locked your front door in my face? Is that what you called it when you shoved a hundred-dollar bill into my hand and told me to find a nursing home so I wouldn't ruin your dinner party?"

Christopher swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "We... we were stressed, Mom. My business partners were coming over—"

"Your business partners," Margaret interrupted, her gaze piercing right through him. "The very men who helped you forge my signature on those two hidden loans eighteen years ago. The loans you thought were buried so deep in shell corporations that no one would ever find them."

Victoria gasped, taking a step back. "You... you knew about the loans?"

"I didn't know," Margaret said softly, leaning forward. "Not until yesterday morning when the bank took my home. But your father knew. Before he died, he knew your greed was a cancer. He set a trap, and you walked right into it like the arrogant fools you raised yourselves to be."

Christopher’s face twisted with sudden, desperate fury. He lunged forward, ignoring the guards. "You can't do this to us! We’re your blood! If you ruin us, you ruin the Vance name!"

"The Vance name," Margaret said, her eyes flashing with lightning, "was built by your father and me through sweat, blood, and honest work. You two built your empires on theft and cruelty. And now, everything you own legally belongs to the person you tried to destroy."
