Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE DRIVEWAYOfficer Marcus Dunham’s hand dropped instinctively to the heavy polymer grip of his service weapon. The afternoon sun beat down on the manicured suburban asphalt of Evergreen, casting harsh glints off the windshield of the father’s sedan. Arthur Vance stood in his own driveway, a picture of immaculate domesticity—pressed khakis, a clean button-down shirt, and a smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes.

"Officer," Arthur said, his voice smooth as polished stone. "I see my boy found you. Kids have such wild imaginations these days, don't they? Caleb has been acting out ever since his mother walked out on us. It's tragic, really."

Behind Marcus, Caleb let out a sharp, involuntary gasp, his small fingers twisting desperately into the fabric of the officer's uniform. Inside the darkened foyer, nine-year-old Emma peered around the doorframe, her face pale, bruised, and hollowed out by starvation.

Marcus didn't blink. He kept his stance wide, placing his body squarely between the children and the approaching man. "Mr. Vance, step away from the vehicle. Keep your hands where I can see them."

Arthur’s smile didn't falter, but his right hand lingered just an inch out of sight behind the passenger seat headrest. "Now, Officer, let's not make a scene. The neighbors are watching. We're a respectable family. Just hand the children over, and we can pretend none of this trespassing ever happened."

"The basement," Emma’s whisper echoed in Marcus's ear, sharp as shattered glass. "He’s going to burn it all."
