Chapter 7 - THE BLACK BOX"Get the kids!" a voice rasped from the front doorway.

Marcus whipped around, pistol raised, expecting more reinforcements. Instead, Clara stumbled up the basement stairs, clutching the heavy steel lockbox tightly against her chest. Her face was smeared with soot and sweat, but her eyes burned with absolute resolve.
"We don't have time to wait for local backup," Clara panted, grabbing Caleb and Emma by their hands. "The local police department has been compromised. Arthur wasn't just working alone—half the precinct was on his payroll."
The words hit Marcus like a physical blow. It explained why his backup call had been intercepted so quickly, and why no secondary units had arrived despite twenty minutes passing since his initial call.
"My precinct?" Marcus muttered in disbelief.
"Look inside the box," Clara urged, slamming the heavy steel lid down on the kitchen table and using a heavy fireplace poker to smash the warped latch until it finally snapped open.
Inside wasn't just paper. It was a ruggedized military laptop, a stack of encrypted flash drives, and a thick ledger containing names, badge numbers, and bank account routing numbers.
At the very top of the list, highlighted in red ink, was the name of Marcus’s own direct commanding officer: Captain Thomas Vance—Arthur’s older brother.
The entire operation—the fake disappearance, the psychological torture of the children, the suburban cover—wasn't just a domestic abuse case. It was a deep-cover money-laundering and intelligence-trafficking ring operating right out of the local municipal government.
"That's why Arthur kept us locked up," Emma whispered, looking up at Marcus with heartbreaking maturity. "Uncle Thomas told him we knew too much about the men who visited the house at night."
Before Marcus could digest the horrifying scale of the conspiracy, the crunch of heavy tires graveling up the driveway signaled the arrival of a new vehicle.
Headlights swept across the living room windows, blindingly bright.

A familiar voice crackled over a high-powered cruiser loudspeaker outside:
"Officer Dunham. This is Captain Vance. Step out of the house immediately with your hands on your head. You are interfering with a federal counter-terrorism operation."
