Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE"The boy said the officer went down here," one of the tactical operatives barked, his voice muffled by a balaclava. He grabbed Caleb by the collar of his jacket, lifting the seven-year-old off his feet with casual cruelty. "Where is the flash drive, kid? Tell me where your mother hid the digital files, or I'll snap your brother's arm right now."

Emma squeezed her eyes shut, tears streaming down her dirty face, but she clamped her mouth shut in stubborn, agonizing defiance.

Marcus knew he couldn't take them both in a straight firefight without risking the children’s lives. He needed a distraction, and he needed it now.

Reaching into his pocket, Marcus pulled out his department-issued radio, toggled the emergency override frequency to maximum volume, and hurled it across the hardwood floor into the far corner of the kitchen.

SCREEECH—

The deafening audio feedback shrieked through the house like a dying jet engine.

Both operatives spun around toward the noise, their assault rifles sweeping instinctively in that direction.

"Now!" Marcus roared, leaping out from the stairwell.

He didn't aim for center mass; he aimed for the weapon of the nearest operative, firing a single, calculated shot that shattered the rifle barrel and sent the man stumbling backward into the kitchen island.

The second operative reacted with terrifying speed, pivoting and bringing his rifle around to bear directly on Marcus’s chest.

Before the man could pull the trigger, a small, dark shadow darted out from behind the hallway wall.

Seven-year-old Caleb threw his entire body forward, slamming his head directly into the back of the operative’s knee with all the fury of a cornered animal.

The operative’s leg buckled, his shot going wide, punching a massive hole through the living room ceiling.

Marcus closed the distance in a fraction of a second, driving the heavy steel butt of his pistol into the side of the operative’s helmet with a sickening thud. The man dropped like a felled tree, unconscious before he hit the ground.
