Chapter 9 - THE STORM CELLAR ESCAPEThe heavy oak front door groaned under a massive kick from the tactical team outside. Wood splinters flew across the living room as the first heavy boot breached the threshold.

"Move! Move! Move!" shouted the operatives inside the house.

Marcus didn't wait. He shoved the back door open, ushering Clara and the two children out into the overgrown backyard just as the first flashbang grenade detonated inside the kitchen.

BANG!

A blinding flash of magnesium white light and a concussive shockwave shook the back of the house, but Marcus and the family had already scrambled down the concrete slope toward the heavy metal doors of the storm cellar.

The padlock holding the cellar shut was thick, rusted iron. Marcus didn't hesitate—he jammed the heavy steel barrel of his service pistol into the shackle of the lock and fired two rapid rounds directly into the mechanism.

Clang!

The lock shattered, and Marcus threw the heavy iron doors open, plunging down the steep concrete steps into the damp, subterranean dark below.

"Down! Get down!" Marcus yelled, pushing Clara and the children inside before diving in himself and slamming the metal doors shut from the inside, dropping the heavy interior security bar into place just as the first heavy footsteps thudded onto the grass above.

Above them, muffled shouts rang out against the metal doors.

"They're in the cellar! Cut the latch!"

A high-pitched, terrifying whine echoed through the metal—a heavy-duty angle grinder biting into the steel of the cellar doors. Sparks began to shower down through the narrow crack between the doors, illuminating the pitch-black space like falling stars.

"Marcus..." Emma sobbed, burying her face in Clara’s shoulder. "They're going to get us."

"Not today," Marcus whispered, sweeping his flashlight across the damp concrete floor of the storm cellar.

He spotted what he was looking for: a heavy municipal drainage pipe, large enough for a person to crawl through, leading away from the property toward the wooded ravine behind the subdivision. It was slick with mud and water, but it was their only way out.

"Clara, take Caleb and Emma through that pipe right now," Marcus ordered, pushing the laptop and lockbox into her arms. "Don't stop running until you hit the highway."

"What about you?" Clara asked, her eyes wide with terror. "You can't hold them off by yourself!"

"I'll buy you the time you need," Marcus said, offering a grim, reassuring smile as he cocked his pistol and turned back toward the cellar stairs. "Go!"
