The appearance of the police officers turned the luxury hospital suite into a crime scene. Mark’s face went from pale to completely translucent. He took a step backward, his back hitting the wall, looking wildly around the room for an exit that didn't exist.
"Officers," Edward said, his voice commanding and steady. "This is Mark Vance and his mother, Vivian Vance. I have already provided your precinct with the forensic financial documents detailing the theft of over nine million dollars from my granddaughter's trust fund over the past three years. I wish to press charges immediately. For everything."
One of the officers, a burly man with a no-nonsense expression, stepped forward and unclipped a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Mark Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft. You have the right to remain silent..."
"No! Wait! Claire, tell them to stop!" Mark yelled, his voice echoing loudly in the sterile room. He looked at me, his eyes full of fake tears, trying to leverage the three years of emotional manipulation he had used to control me. "Claire, think about our daughter! Do you want her father to be in prison? Think about what people will say! I love you, Claire! I did it for us!"
Hearing the word "love" come out of his mouth made me want to vomit.
"Don't you dare use my daughter to save yourself," I said, my voice shaking with a fierce, newfound rage. "You didn't think about her when you refused to pay for the safe car seat I wanted. You didn't think about her when you left me alone at home while you went out to expensive dinners with your mother using my grandfather's money. You don't love me, Mark. You loved my grandfather's bank account."
"Claire, please!" Vivian shrieked as the second officer moved toward her. She clutched her luxury bags to her chest like a shield. "You ungrateful little brat! We took you into our family! We gave you a name! Your grandfather is a tyrant, he's brainwashing you!"
"Ma'am, put the bags down and place your hands behind your back," the officer commanded.
"Get your hands off me! Do you know how much this jacket costs?!" Vivian screamed as the officer grabbed her wrists, forcing her to drop her precious designer goods. The sound of the handcuffs clicking shut around her manicured wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.
Mark tried to resist, pulling his arm away from the officer, but he was quickly slammed against the wall. The crisp designer jacket he was so proud of was crumpled against the cold drywall.
"Claire! Please! Call your grandfather off! We can settle this privately! I'll give it all back!" Mark begged, his voice cracking into a sob as the cuffs tightly bound his wrists.
"You can't give back what you've already spent, Mark," I said coldly, looking at the man I thought I loved, feeling absolutely nothing but disgust. "And you can never give back the years of stress, hunger, and humiliation you put me through."
Edward stepped back, standing by my bedside, his arm protecting me and the baby from their desperate flailing. "Take them away," he ordered the officers. "My lawyers will meet you at the precinct with the formal complaints."
As Mark and Vivian were dragged out of the hospital room, screaming profanities and begging for mercy, the nurses and patients in the hallway stopped to stare. The luxury shopping bags remained scattered on the hospital floor—a pathetic monument to their greed.
The door finally clicked shut, leaving the room in a sudden, ringing silence.
My daughter had stopped crying, lulled back to sleep by the sudden quiet. I looked down at her tiny, innocent face, and then I looked up at my grandfather.
The adrenaline that had kept me upright suddenly evaporated, and I burst into deep, sobbing tears.
"Oh, my sweet girl," Grandpa whispered, immediately sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling both me and the baby into his strong, protective arms. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't look closer. I’m so sorry I let them hurt you."

"I was so stupid, Grandpa," I sobbed into his shoulder. "I believed him. I thought we were poor. I thought I was a burden."
"You were never a burden, Claire," Edward said, his voice thick with emotion as he kissed the top of my head. "You are a Whitmore. And today, we begin the process of taking back everything they stole from you."
