By the next morning, the news of the Vance family’s arrest had sent shockwaves through our local high society. But Edward Whitmore wasn't done. Arresting them was just the opening move in a grand game of chess.

While I rested in the hospital, now moved to the most luxurious VIP penthouse suite under a pseudonym for my safety, my grandfather’s legal and financial teams were working at lightning speed.

"They have nothing left, Claire," my grandfather explained the next afternoon, handing me a fresh cup of tea. A private nurse was currently watching my daughter, whom I had named Hope, in the adjoining room. "By 9:00 AM today, we obtained an emergency federal injunction. Every single asset tied to Mark, Vivian, and their shell companies has been completely frozen."

I took a sip of the tea, feeling the warmth spread through me. For the first time in three years, the dark cloud of financial anxiety that had choked me was completely gone. "What does that mean for them?"

Grandpa smiled, a cold, predatory expression that reminded me why he was feared in the business world. "It means that right now, Vivian’s high-priced defense attorney is refusing to represent her because her credit cards are being declined. It means the lease on Mark’s luxury sports car has been terminated, and the vehicle is being repossessed as we speak. It means the penthouse apartment they lived in—which was paid for entirely by the money stolen from you—has a foreclosure notice pinned to the front door."

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for years. "They thought they were so clever."

"They were arrogant," Grandpa corrected. "They assumed that because you were gentle, you were weak. They assumed that because I am old, I wasn't watching. They didn't realize that every single dollar they spent left a digital footprint that leads straight to a prison cell."

Just then, my cracked phone began to buzz furiously on the bedside table. I picked it up. The screen displayed an incoming call from the county jail. It was a collect call from Mark.

I looked at Grandpa. He nodded slowly. "Take it. Let him know exactly where he stands."

I pressed answer and put it on speakerphone.

"Claire! Claire, thank God!" Mark’s voice sounded frantic, completely stripped of his usual smooth, confident tone. There was a background noise of shouting men and clanging metal bars. "You have to help me! The lawyers won't talk to me! They froze my accounts! I can't even buy a bag of chips from the commissary! Vivian is having a nervous breakdown in the women's wing!"

"Why are you calling me, Mark?" I asked, my voice calm, steady, and utterly devoid of emotion.

"Claire, please, I'm your husband! We have a baby together! You can't let your grandfather do this to us! Just drop the charges, tell them it was a joint account and I had your permission to use the money! If you do that, the assets will be unfrozen, and we can go back to being a family! I swear, I'll let you spend whatever you want now!"

I actually laughed. It was a bitter, mocking sound that surprised even me.

"You'll let me spend my own money, Mark? How generous of you," I said. "But you see, there's a flaw in your plan. We are no longer a family. My lawyer will be serving you with divorce papers in your jail cell by tomorrow morning. I am seeking sole legal and physical custody of Hope, and you will never see a single dime of my family's money ever again."

"Claire, you can't do this!" Mark screamed, his voice turning vicious as he realized his manipulation wasn't working. "You're nothing without me! You're just a pathetic, insecure girl! You'll ruin my life!"

"You ruined your own life the moment you decided to steal from my child," I replied coldly. "Enjoy the prison food, Mark. I hear it’s much cheaper than the groceries you forced me to buy."

I slammed the phone down, cutting off his desperate screams. I looked at Grandpa, a massive weight lifting off my shoulders.

"You did beautifully, Claire," he said proudly.
