Just when we thought the worst of the betrayal was uncovered, a second bomb exploded.

Two days after the arrest, I was cleared to leave the hospital. Grandpa brought me and baby Hope to his massive, heavily guarded estate on the outskirts of the city. For the first time, Hope was sleeping in a custom-designed, beautifully carved wooden crib, wrapped in the softest organic silk blankets. She was surrounded by everything she could ever need, protected by a grandfather who loved her.

But while I was finally feeling peace, Edward’s legal team uncovered a horrifying detail in the bank transfers.

We were sitting in Grandpa’s expansive study when his chief investigator, a sharp woman named Sarah, walked in with a new stack of folders.

"Mr. Whitmore, Claire," Sarah said, her expression grim. "We have a major problem. We traced the security overrides on Claire’s trust fund. Mark and Vivian couldn't have accessed that money alone. The account was protected by a dual-authentication protocol that required an inside signature from someone within the Whitmore family network."

My heart stopped. "What? Who?"

Grandpa’s face darkened, his fists clenching on his desk. "Who was it, Sarah?"

Sarah placed a photograph on the desk. It was a photo of my aunt, Helen—my mother's sister, a woman who had always smiled to my face but constantly made passive-aggressive comments about my marriage to Mark.

"Aunt Helen?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "But... why? She's wealthy! She doesn't need the money!"

"She didn't do it just for the money, Claire. She did it out of spite," Sarah explained, opening the file. "We found encrypted emails between Helen and Vivian dating back to before your wedding. Helen was furious when your grandfather named you as the primary beneficiary of the Whitmore core estate trust instead of her own children. She wanted to prove that you were incompetent. She conspired with Vivian to let Mark drain the account, intending to use your financial 'mismanagement' as proof to Edward that you couldn't handle the family fortune."

I sank back into the leather chair, feeling a sickening sense of vertigo. The betrayal wasn't just from the predators I had married into; it was from the blood relatives who sat across from me at Thanksgiving dinner.

Helen had watched me struggle. She had seen me wearing that frayed sweater at family gatherings. She had seen my pale face and hollow cheeks, and she had secretly gloated, knowing she was helping Mark strip me of my birthright.

Grandpa stood up slowly, the sheer rage radiating off him causing the temperature in the room to drop.

"Helen," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "She dared to touch my granddaughter. She dared to put my great-granddaughter's life at risk for her own petty greed."

He looked at Sarah. "Does she know we have this?"

"Not yet, sir. She believes her digital tracks are completely erased through an offshore proxy."

Grandpa turned to me, his eyes gleaming with a cold, calculated vengeance. "Claire, tomorrow is the annual Whitmore Charity Gala. Helen is the chairperson this year. She expects to stand on that stage and receive applause from the entire city's elite."

He leaned down, taking my hands in his. "Would you like to join me in giving her a proper introduction?"

May you like

A cold, hard resolve washed over me. The old Claire would have cried and begged for peace. But this Claire was a mother fighting for her daughter's future.

"I'll get my dress ready, Grandpa," I said, my voice steady. "Let's show everyone exactly who Aunt Helen really is."
