Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS COLLAPSESWithin three hours, Daniel Sterling’s pristine corporate universe imploded into a smoking ruin.

The arrest wasn't quiet. It wasn't handled with the polite discretion usually afforded to high-powered attorneys. At 1:15 PM, while Daniel was screaming down the phone at a junior partner, two federal marshals walked directly into his corner office, slapped steel handcuffs onto his expensive Brioni cuffs, and marched him past fifty staring, whispering colleagues.

News travels fast in the legal district. By 2:00 PM, legal blogs were already publishing breaking headlines: PROMINENT FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY DANIEL STERLING ARRESTED BY FEDERAL MARSHALS IN CORRUPTION AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROBE.

Back at Evelyn’s secure estate, the atmosphere was a mix of intense relief and lingering trauma. Maya sat at the kitchen table, watching live news coverage on her laptop as reporters showed footage of Daniel being led out of his skyscraper in handcuffs, his head bowed, desperately trying to shield his face from the cameras.

"I... I can't believe it," Maya whispered, covering her mouth with trembling hands. "Mom... how? How did you do all of this behind the scenes without me knowing?"

Evelyn poured a fresh cup of coffee, sitting across from her daughter. "When you spend thirty years administering federal law, Maya, you don't just retire. Your network stays active. Your friends remain loyal. And abusers like Daniel? They are predictable creatures. They believe their power makes them invisible, so they stop hiding their tracks."

Just then, the front door opened, and little Lily—Maya's six-year-old daughter—ran into the kitchen, dropping her pink backpack on the floor.

"Mommy! Grandma!" Lily cheered, running straight into Maya's arms. "A nice police officer drove me home from school early today! He said we don't have to worry about daddy anymore because the bad man is gone!"

Maya closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face as she buried her face in her daughter’s hair. For the first time in three years, the crushing weight on her chest lifted.

But Evelyn’s phone buzzed on the counter.

She picked it up. It was a encrypted text from Captain Vance: Target’s chief partner is cooperating. They found offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under shell companies linked to extortion and judicial bribery. Judge Alvarez has recused herself. The trial has been fast-tracked to the Federal District Court.

Evelyn stared at the screen, her expression unreadable.

Daniel thought he was the master of the courtroom. He thought money, intimidation, and expensive suits were the ultimate armor.

He was about to learn that when a federal judge takes things personally, the law doesn't just bite—it devours.
