Chapter 6 - THE RAT’S NESTThree weeks later, the federal holding facility interrogation room smelled of industrial cleaner and stale coffee.

Daniel Sterling sat at the metal table, his designer suit replaced by an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. The arrogant, untouchable attorney was gone. In his place was a hollowed-out shell of a man with dark circles under his bloodshot eyes and a nervous twitch in his left thumb.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

Evelyn walked in alone, carrying a single manila folder. She didn't look like a vengeful mother; she looked like an inspector reviewing a failed building foundation. She sat down across from him, resting the folder on the table.

Daniel stared at her, his lips trembling. A bitter, broken laugh escaped his throat.

"You... you ruined everything," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "My firm... my accounts... my license... gone. Disbarred in forty-eight states before noon."

"You ruined your own life, Daniel," Evelyn replied evenly. "Arrogance is a blinding disease. You thought because you wore expensive suits and intimidated vulnerable people, you were safe from the consequences of your own brutality."

Daniel leaned forward, slamming his cuffed hands onto the table. "What do you want? More humiliation? Are you going to put me away for twenty years?"

"That's up to a federal jury," Evelyn said, opening the folder to reveal a series of financial statements and signed affidavits. "But before your trial begins, there is one final matter."

She slid a single sheet of paper toward him.

"What is this?" Daniel muttered, squinting down at the text.

"A complete, irrevocable relinquishment of all parental rights, a full confession to financial extortion and domestic abuse, and an agreement to cooperate with the federal prosecutor’s office regarding your corrupt partners."

Daniel stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. "If I sign this... I'll spend the next ten years in federal prison."

"If you don't sign it," Evelyn replied, her voice dropping an octave into a chilling whisper, "I will personally preside over your sentencing hearing. And I promise you, Daniel... I don't give discounts to bullies."

Daniel looked up into Evelyn’s eyes. For the first time in his life, he saw the absolute, unyielding weight of true justice staring back at him. There was no escape. No favor to call in. No judge to bribe.

With a shaking hand, Daniel picked up the pen.
