Chapter 5 - THE EMERGENCY INJUNCTIONThe emergency family court hearing was scheduled for 9:00 AM the following morning in the downtown municipal courthouse.

Despite his federal arrest, Daniel’s defense team—led by his arrogant senior partner, Richard Thorne—had pulled every procedural string available to secure a temporary release pending trial. Thorne strode into the courtroom wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, flanked by two junior associates carrying towering stacks of legal precedent.
Thorne looked around the gallery with supreme confidence. He expected Judge Alvarez—the friendly, golf-playing acquaintance of Daniel's—to preside over the docket.
Instead, the courtroom doors at the front swung open.
The bailiff stepped forward, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls: "All rise for the Visiting Special Magistrate and Senior Federal Judge, The Honorable Evelyn Vance-Montgomery!"
Thorne froze mid-stride, his briefcase slipping an inch from his fingers.
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Defense attorneys in the back rows choked on their coffee. Word had spread overnight, but nobody expected this. Evelyn walked in wearing her traditional black robes, her white hair neatly pinned, her expression carved from absolute granite.
She took her seat behind the high mahogany bench, adjusted her reading glasses, and looked down at the cowering defense table.
"Be seated," Evelyn commanded, her voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor.
Thorne swallowed hard, adjusting his tie as he scrambled to his feet. He approached the podium, his voice trembling slightly despite his best efforts to sound professional.
"Your... Your Honor," Thorne stammered, pointing a shaking finger toward the plaintiff's table where Maya sat flanked by federal protection officers. "We object to this entire proceeding! Judge Vance-Montgomery has a direct familial conflict of interest! She is the maternal grandmother of the child in question! This is a gross violation of judicial protocol—"
Evelyn leaned forward, resting her elbows on the bench. The courtroom went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
"Mr. Thorne," Evelyn said, her voice eerily calm. "Let me stop you right there before you embarrass yourself further."
She pressed a button on her desk console, and the courtroom's massive overhead digital screens flickered to life.
Instantly, audio began playing through the courtroom speakers. It was Daniel’s voice—loud, clear, and dripping with venom—boasting about how he had paid off local magistrates to fix custody outcomes, threatening to bury Maya, and detailing his hidden financial assets.
Thorne’s face turned the color of spoiled milk.
"That... that recording was obtained without consent! It’s inadmissible hearsay!" Thorne shouted, panicking.
"It is a federally authenticated wiretap authorized under an active RICO and domestic extortion investigation," Evelyn corrected coldly, her eyes flashing with judicial fury. "Furthermore, Mr. Thorne, under Section 455 of Title 28 of the United States Code, a judge must disqualify herself in any proceeding where her impartiality might reasonably be questioned—unless, of course, both parties and the Chief Circuit Judge sign an emergency designation waiver due to extraordinary corruption within the local municipal bench."
She slid a signed document across her desk to the court clerk.
"The Chief Circuit Judge signed it at 6:00 AM today. I have full, unhindered federal jurisdiction over this custody dispute, as well as the accompanying RICO assets forfeiture."

Evelyn slammed her gavel down once. The sharp crack echoed like a gunshot through the room.
"Emergency custody is granted permanently to the mother. All joint assets are frozen effective immediately pending federal audit. And Mr. Thorne? If you interrupt my court again, I’ll hold you in contempt faster than your partner can pack his toothbrush in county jail."
