Chapter 7 - SUNLIGHT AFTER THE STORMSix months later, the courtyard of Evelyn’s home was filled with the sound of genuine laughter.

Sunlight filtered through the sprawling oak trees, casting warm golden patterns across the green lawn where little Lily chased a golden retriever puppy, her bright pink sneakers kicking up soft puffs of grass.
Maya sat on the patio porch swing, holding a cup of fresh coffee. She looked healthier, stronger, her posture upright and free of the constant, phantom tension that used to grip her shoulders. The dark shadows under her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, quiet peace.
Evelyn walked out of the sliding glass doors carrying a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
"Careful, they're hot," Evelyn smiled, setting the plate down on the wooden table.
Maya took one, taking a small bite before looking up at her mother with tears shimmering in her eyes. "I still can't believe it's over. The house is sold, Daniel’s partners took plea deals, and... we're finally safe."
"You were always strong enough to survive it, Maya," Evelyn said gently, sitting beside her daughter and wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "You just needed someone to remind the world that the law belongs to everyone—not just the men in expensive suits."
Maya leaned her head against her mother’s shoulder, watching Lily play in the golden afternoon light.
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you think you'll ever go back to wearing the robes?"
May you like
Evelyn smiled, looking out toward the horizon where the sun was beginning its slow, brilliant descent, bathing the world in a warm, unshakeable glow.
"I don't need to, Maya," Evelyn whispered softly. "Justice was served right here."
