Chapter 1 - THE ER DIAGNOSIS & A TERRIFYING DISCOVERY

The sterile white light of the Emergency Department flickered softly overhead, casting long, hollow shadows across the hallway. Every second felt like an eternity. Inside the cubicle, Emiliano lay fragile against the harsh white sheets, his skin pale and clammy. The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound grounding my shattered reality.
Daniela sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tightly interwoven with Emiliano’s small, shivering hand. Her tears had dried into faint salt tracks on her cheeks, leaving behind an expression of raw, protective fury. I stood near the curtain, my muscles so tense they burned.
A tall doctor with tired eyes and a green stethoscope stepped through the curtain. Dr. Miller looked down at his chart, then up at us with a heavy expression.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vance?" he asked quietly.
"How is he?" Daniela’s voice trembled, barely audible over the hum of the medical equipment.
"Emiliano is stable for now, thanks to the fluids and anti-nausea medication," Dr. Miller began, his tone grave. "However, his blood work and physical exam revealed two major issues. First, he suffered severe acute food poisoning combined with early-stage hypothermia. Being left in a cold, damp environment with elevated heart rate and vomiting severely dehydrated him. If he had stayed in that basement another hour..." He didn't need to finish the sentence. The unspoken truth hung heavy in the air.
"What else, Doctor?" I asked, my jaw clenched so hard my teeth ached.
"That’s the troubling part," Dr. Miller said, dropping his voice. "We ran a tox screen to identify the source of the severe gastrointestinal distress. We found trace amounts of a strong, concentrated laxative mixed with a heavy dose of sedative in his system. This wasn't just bad cake or spoiled milk, Mr. Vance. Your son was deliberately given something that caused this violent reaction."
Daniela gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. The blood drained completely from my face.
Deliberately.
"Are you saying... someone poisoned my eight-year-old boy?" I choked out.
"We are legally obligated to report suspicious toxicological findings involving minors to the authorities," Dr. Miller replied firmly. "Child Protective Services and the police have already been notified. Officers are on their way to take your statement."
Outside the ER cubicle, the automatic doors slid open. Gabriela was sitting on a plastic chair in the waiting room, still dabbing at her face with a paper towel, looking like a tragic victim to anyone passing by. Rubén sat two seats away, his face buried in his hands, completely shattered by his wife's actions. My father, Don Arturo, stood near the window, staring out into the dark night with a cold, unyielding silence.
I walked out of the room, my boots clicking hard against the linoleum floor. Gabriela looked up, her eyes wide, attempting to summon a delicate, repentant smile.
"Javier... how is my sweet nephew?" she whimpered, standing up and reaching her hands out toward me. "Please tell me he’s okay. I haven't stopped praying—"
"Shut up," I said, my voice dead and quiet.
Gabriela blinked, caught off guard. "Javier, please, I'm your sister! It was a horrible misunderstanding! I thought he was just throwing a tantrum because Mateo was getting all the attention—"
"The doctor found sedatives and concentrated laxatives in his system, Gabriela," I cut in, stepping directly into her personal space.
Rubén snapped his head up. Don Arturo turned around instantly, his dark eyes fixing on Gabriela like iron sights.
Gabriela’s theatrical tears froze instantly. A flicker of something cold and calculating flashed across her features before she tried to cover it with outrage. "What?! That’s absurd! I would never—why would you even suggest that?!"
"I didn't suggest it. The lab tests proved it," I snapped. "You didn't just lock him in a cold room to punish him. You made him sick on purpose. Why?"
Before Gabriela could answer, two uniformed police officers walked through the sliding doors of the ER lobby, their heavy belts clinking.
"Javier Vance?" the lead officer asked. "We received a call from hospital security regarding a child abuse and potential poisoning investigation."
Gabriela’s face transformed from pale to ghost-white. She took a step back, her eyes darting toward the exit doors.
"Officers," I said, pointing directly at my sister. "That is Gabriela Vance. She locked my son in her freezing basement for hours while he was violently ill, took his phone so he couldn't call for help, and the doctors just confirmed he was drugged."
"That’s a lie!" Gabriela screamed, her voice echoing through the crowded waiting room, drawing stares from patients and nurses alike. "He’s trying to ruin my family! He’s jealous because Dad always loved me more!"
"Gabriela Vance," the officer said sternly, stepping forward and reaching for his handcuffs. "You need to come with us for questioning."
As the metal cuffs clicked around her wrists, Gabriela didn't cry for Emiliano. She didn't ask if her nephew was going to live. Instead, she glared at me with a terrifying, venomous rage.

"You think you won, Javier?" she hissed as they led her away. "You have no idea what’s actually happening. Check your house. Check your bank accounts!"
The doors closed behind her, leaving a chilling echo in the hallway.
