Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE EMPIRE

Gavel strikes filled the room as Judge Vance struggled to regain control. "Order! I will clear this courtroom! Order!"
Agent Ross stood stoically at the podium, unbothered by the uproar.
"According to our investigation," Agent Ross stated calmly, "Gabriela Vance has been operating an illegal money-laundering funnel through a network of shell companies, transferring millions of dollars embezzled from local businesses and family estates into offshore accounts held in the Cayman Islands. Furthermore, we have obtained digital evidence proving she attempted to transfer $2.5 million from Vance Construction's primary reserve account at 6:15 PM on the night of the party—precisely while her nephew was locked in the basement."
Gabriela leaped up from her chair, her face contorted in panic. "No! That’s impossible! Who gave you those files?! Who spoke to you?!"
"Your husband, Rubén Vance, provided full digital forensics and hard-copy ledgers three hours ago," Agent Ross revealed coldly.
Gabriela slowly turned her head toward the back of the room. Sitting in the back row, wearing a quiet, dark suit, was Rubén. He didn't flinch under her gaze. He simply met her eyes with a cold, unblinking glare, raising his chin slightly.
"You ruined me!" Gabriela shrieked, breaking away from her lawyer and lunging toward the gallery. "You pathetic bastard! I made you! You were nothing without me!"
Two bailiffs immediately tackled her to the floor, pushing her arms behind her back as she kicked and screamed like a wild animal. Her polished facade was completely shattered, exposing the frantic, unhinged criminal beneath.
"Bail is denied!" Judge Vance yelled over the chaos. "The defendant will be remanded into federal custody immediately!"
As the officers dragged a screaming, sobbing Gabriela out through the side door, the courtroom slowly quieted down. The reporters scrambled out the back doors to file their breaking news stories.
I sat back in my chair, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Daniela buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing tears of pure relief.
Rubén walked up to us in the aisle. He looked at me, then at Daniela.
"It’s over," Rubén said softly. "The federal agents have frozen all her offshore accounts. The money she stole from your savings account... they’ve already flagged it for restitution. You’ll get every penny back, Javier."
"Thank you, Rubén," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "You saved us today."
"I didn't do it to save you," Rubén said quietly, a shadow passing over his eyes. "I did it because if she got out on bail today, I knew none of us would ever be safe again."
He paused, looking around to ensure no one was listening, then leaned in closer.
"There’s something else, Javier," Rubén whispered, his voice dropping to an icy tone. "The FBI searched her private safe deposit box at the downtown vault this morning. They found something else in there. Something that wasn't about money."

My chest tightened. "What did they find?"
"They found medical records from twelve years ago," Rubén said. "The year your mother died."
