Chapter 4 - THE TWIST IN THE COURTROOM

Three days later, the bail hearing for Gabriela Vance became the focal point of the local media. News reporters swarmed the steps of the county courthouse. The headline was plastered across local news channels: "LOCAL SOCIALITE ARRESTED FOR CHILD ABUSE AND ATTEMPTED POISONING AT CHILDREN’S BIRTHDAY PARTY."
Inside the courtroom, the air was suffocating. Daniela sat beside me on the wooden bench, her face pale, holding my hand with a grip so tight her knuckles were white. Emiliano was back home under the care of my father and a hired pediatric nurse, still traumatized, jumping at every loud noise or closing door.
Across the room, sitting at the defense table, was Gabriela.
She wasn't wearing her expensive designer clothes or her flawless makeup. She wore an orange county jail jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. But her demeanor wasn't broken. She sat up straight, whispering calmly to her high-powered defense attorney, Richard Sterling—a man known for getting wealthy criminals off on technicalities.
Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation) took her seat at the bench and slammed her gavel down.
"We are here for the bail hearing of Gabriela Vance, charged with felony child endangerment, aggravated assault, and chemical poisoning of a minor," Judge Vance announced.
The prosecutor, a sharp woman named Marcus, stood up. "Your Honor, the State moves for remand without bail. The defendant demonstrated extreme cruelty by drugging an eight-year-old child and locking him in an unheated, damp basement for over three hours. Furthermore, toxicological evidence confirms the presence of prescription-grade sedatives in the victim’s bloodstream."
"Objection, Your Honor," Sterling smoothly interrupted, standing up and adjusting his suit jacket. "The prosecution is painting a picture based on emotional hysteria, not facts."
"Emotional hysteria?!" Daniela whispered angrily beside me. I gently laid a hand on her shoulder to keep her calm.
"Your Honor," Sterling continued confidently, "my client admits to a temporary lapse in judgment regarding disciplinary actions. However, the prosecution's claim that Mrs. Vance poisoned her nephew is completely unproven. We have submitted new evidence to the court this morning."
I narrowed my eyes. New evidence?
Sterling picked up a tablet and brought it to the clerk. "We have reviewed the medical logs from the hospital. The victim, Emiliano Vance, had spent the previous evening at a local fast-food restaurant with his parents. We have sworn affidavits from three party guests confirming that several children felt ill after eating the cake served at the party—cake that was provided by a third-party commercial bakery."
A murmur rippled through the courtroom spectators.
"Furthermore," Sterling proclaimed, turning around to look directly at me with a smirk, "we have evidence that Mr. Javier Vance has been under severe financial strain due to failed investments. We believe Mr. Vance deliberately fabricated these poisoning allegations and placed sedatives into his own son's system to frame his wealthy sister and secure control of his father’s multi-million-dollar estate!"
"That is a complete lie!" I shouted, jumping to my feet.
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel sharply. "Mr. Vance, sit down immediately or I will have you removed!"
Daniela pulled me back into my seat. My heart was pounding like a sledgehammer against my ribs. Gabriela slowly turned her head toward me from the defense table, a subtle, triumphant smile touching the corners of her mouth.
"Your Honor," Sterling pushed further, "my client is a pillars of this community, a mother, and a loving philanthropist. She poses no flight risk. We ask for bail to be set at a reasonable amount."
Prosecutor Marcus stood up to counter, but before she could speak, the doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
A man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped inside, holding a heavy yellow envelope. He didn't look like a lawyer or a police officer. He had the sharp, calculating look of a federal investigator.
"Your Honor," the man announced, his voice echoing loudly across the courtroom. "My name is Agent David Ross from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division. I advise you to pause these proceedings immediately."
The entire courtroom went dead silent. Sterling’s smooth smile vanished. Gabriela’s head whipped around, her face instantly draining of color.
"Agent Ross?" Judge Vance frowned. "What is the meaning of this intrusion?"
May you like
"Gabriela Vance is not just facing state charges for child endangerment, Your Honor," Agent Ross said, marching down the center aisle and handing a set of sealed documents to the bailiff. "As of thirty minutes ago, a federal grand jury has indicted Mrs. Vance on thirty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and money laundering involving international cartel accounts."
The courtroom erupted into total chaos.
