CHAPTER 2 — THE EVIDENCE WAS TOO PERFECT

By sunset, every major news channel carried the same headline:
"Dangerous Bank Murder Suspect Captured After Five-Day Manhunt."
Daniel sat alone inside a cold interrogation room.
Detective Marcus Hale placed a thick folder on the metal table.
"You still want to tell me you're innocent?"
"I am innocent."
Marcus opened the folder.
Security footage.
Witness statements.
DNA reports.
Phone records.
Every page seemed to point directly at Daniel.
Even his fingerprints had somehow been found on the getaway car.
Daniel stared at the evidence in disbelief.
"This... this is impossible."
Marcus leaned forward.
"Impossible?"
"We found your fingerprints."
"I've never touched that car."
"We recovered hair matching your DNA."
"I've never been near the crime scene!"
Marcus remained silent.
Years of experience told him guilty people often denied everything.
But something about Daniel felt...
Wrong.
Too calm.
Too confused.
Not frightened of prison.
Frightened of the truth no one would believe.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
A man entered a luxury penthouse wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.
He locked the door.
Opened a hidden safe.
Inside were stacks of cash.
A black handgun.
Several fake passports.
And dozens of forged identity documents.
Among them...
A driver's license bearing the name:
Daniel Carter.
The man smiled.
He carefully peeled off a realistic silicone mask from his face.
Underneath...
He looked nothing like Daniel.
He had spent nearly two years studying every detail of the teacher's life.
His habits.
His neighborhood.
His appearance.
Even copying his hairstyle and growing the same beard.
Then he quietly planted fingerprints...
Hair...
And stolen personal information until the police investigation pointed to only one man.
Daniel.
Back at the station...
Detective Marcus received a phone call.
A frightened elderly woman whispered only one sentence before hanging up.
"You're holding the wrong man... and the real killer is standing right behind you."
Marcus spun around.
The hallway was empty.
But on the floor...
Someone had left a small envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Marcus's face turned pale.
The picture showed the real bank robber...
Standing beside Daniel.
On the exact same day.
At the exact same time.
In two different places.
For the first time since the investigation began...
Marcus realized something terrifying.
If this photograph was real...
May you like
Then someone inside the police department had deliberately framed an innocent man.
