CHAPTER 1 — The Necklace She Swore She'd Never Remove

The bell above the jewelry store door rang softly.
Every elegant customer inside instinctively turned.
A pregnant woman stood at the entrance.
Her faded blue dress barely covered her swollen belly. Her worn sneakers were soaked from the rain. Dark circles surrounded her exhausted eyes.
She looked completely out of place among the sparkling diamonds.
Some customers immediately whispered.
"She must be in the wrong store."
"Security should probably watch her."
The young salesman behind the counter, Ethan Brooks, noticed the uncomfortable stares before she even reached him.
Yet something about the woman didn't look dishonest.
She looked... broken.
She slowly stopped in front of the display case.
"I'm sorry to bother you," she whispered.
"I need to sell something."
Ethan gave a polite smile.
"What would you like to sell?"
Her trembling fingers reached toward the silver necklace around her neck.
For several long seconds she couldn't unclasp it.
Almost as if her heart refused to let it go.
Finally...
The chain came free.
She carefully placed it onto the velvet counter.
"My husband gave this to me."
"My last birthday."
"It's all I have left."
Ethan picked it up.
At first glance, it looked like a simple silver necklace.
But then he noticed something unusual.
Hidden beneath the clasp...
A tiny engraved police badge.
His eyes narrowed.
"Where did your husband get this?"
The woman swallowed.
"He didn't buy it."
"It was presented to him after his first hostage rescue."
Ethan looked closer.
The badge number.
The serial engraving.
The craftsmanship.
This wasn't jewelry.
It was a custom-made ceremonial piece.
One that couldn't legally be duplicated.
"What's your husband's name?"
For a second...
The woman couldn't answer.
Then she whispered...
"Officer Daniel Carter."
The entire store suddenly felt colder.
Even before Ethan reacted...
An elderly customer standing nearby dropped the shopping bag in her hand.
"I know that name..."
"He saved my grandson."
The woman nodded quietly.
"He died six months ago."
"During a special operation."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan carefully placed the necklace back onto the velvet cloth.
"I can offer five hundred dollars."
Without hesitation...
She nodded.
"I'll take it."
She reached for the money.
But before letting go of the necklace...
She kissed it one final time.
"I'm sorry..."
"Our baby needs somewhere to sleep."
She walked toward the exit.
Three steps.
Four.
Five.
Then...
"Ethan."
A deep voice echoed from the back office.
"Lock the front doors."
Every customer froze.
No one knew why.
But the owner of the jewelry store had just walked out...
And the moment he saw the necklace...
May you like
The color drained from his face.
"I know exactly whose this is."
