CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Locker Only Daniel Knew About

Six months after the memorial ceremony, life was finally beginning to feel stable again.
Emily had moved into the small house Richard had given her. Her baby boy, little Daniel, filled every room with laughter that had once seemed impossible.
For the first time since her husband's death, hope had returned.
Then, one rainy Tuesday morning, someone knocked on her door.
Captain Marcus Hale stood outside, holding a weathered metal box.
"I think this belongs to you."
Emily frowned.
"What is it?"
Marcus hesitated.
"We found it hidden inside an abandoned police evidence locker."
"The locker was registered under Daniel's name."
Emily's hands trembled as she accepted the box.
The lock had already been removed.
Inside were three objects.
A faded notebook.
An old flash drive.
And a sealed envelope with only two words written across it.
For Emily.
She immediately recognized Daniel's handwriting.
Tears blurred her vision before she even opened it.
My love...
If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to finish what I started.
If anything happens to me, don't believe everything the department tells you.
I trusted the wrong people.
But I also found the truth.
The flash drive contains everything.
Promise me one thing...
Protect our child before you protect my name.
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
She looked toward Marcus.
"You've read this?"
He slowly shook his head.
"I never opened it."
"It was addressed to you."
Richard arrived a few minutes later after Marcus called him.
The three of them connected the flash drive to an old laptop.
Folders appeared on the screen.
Surveillance videos.
Financial records.
Phone recordings.
Dozens of classified files.
Daniel had secretly been investigating a criminal organization that had been bribing police officers for years.
One name appeared over and over again.
Commissioner Victor Grayson.
Marcus stared at the screen in disbelief.
"Impossible..."
"He's one of the most respected officers in the state."
Richard looked closer.
"Or maybe that's exactly why no one suspected him."
Then another folder opened automatically.
A hidden video.
Daniel appeared on screen.
He looked exhausted.
"If you're watching this..."
"It means they won."
"They know I've been collecting evidence."
"If anything happens to me..."
"It wasn't the criminals who killed me."
"It was someone wearing the same badge I wore."
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly sat down.
His face turned pale.
For the first time in twenty-five years of service...
He questioned everything he believed about the department.
Before anyone could speak—
Emily's phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered.
A calm voice whispered,
"Delete the files."
"Or your son will grow up without a mother."
The call ended.
Emily looked down at little Daniel sleeping peacefully in his crib.
May you like
The war her husband had died fighting...
Had just found its next target.
