CHAPTER 2 — The Owner's Secret

The store owner, seventy-year-old Richard Lawson, stared at the necklace as though he had seen a ghost.
His hands shook.
"No..."
"It can't be."
He picked it up carefully.
Then flipped over the pendant.
Hidden beneath years of wear...
Were three tiny engraved letters.
R.L.
The woman frowned.
"How do you know this necklace?"
Richard's voice cracked.
"Because..."
"I made it."
Gasps filled the showroom.
Thirty years earlier...
Richard had served as the official jeweler for the city's Police Honor Foundation.
Only officers recognized for extraordinary bravery received handcrafted commemorative necklaces.
Exactly thirty had ever been created.
Daniel Carter had received the last one.
Richard looked at the widow.
"Your husband once saved my daughter."
The room became silent again.
"Ten years ago."
"There was a bank robbery."
"My little girl was trapped inside."
"The officers hesitated."
"But Daniel didn't."
"He ran in anyway."
"He carried my daughter out while bullets were still flying."
Richard slowly wiped away tears.
"I owe my family to him."
The pregnant woman looked stunned.
"I... never knew."
"He never talked about work."
Richard smiled sadly.
"Heroes rarely do."
He opened the cash drawer.
Placed five hundred dollars inside an envelope.
Then quietly added another envelope.
Ten thousand dollars.
The woman immediately shook her head.
"No."
"I can't accept charity."
Richard looked into her eyes.
"This isn't charity."
"It's a debt."
She refused again.
Then something unexpected happened.
The store's security monitor suddenly flashed.
Someone outside was pounding on the locked glass door.
Hard.
Three expensive SUVs had just stopped outside.
Men in dark suits stepped out.
One pointed directly at the pregnant widow.
Richard whispered...
May you like
"Oh no..."
"They found her."
