CHAPTER 1 — THE PROMISE THAT NEVER EXPIRED

The SUV disappeared into downtown traffic before Elena found her voice again.

She stared at the stranger beside her.

Marco Montana.

The name meant nothing to her.

But the way he had spoken her mother's name...

That wasn't acting.

That was grief.

"Who is Raphael Cain?" she demanded.

Marco didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he made three unexpected turns through narrow side streets, checked every mirror twice, then drove into the underground parking garage of an abandoned hotel whose entrance had been hidden behind a broken loading dock.

Only after two steel security gates closed behind them did he finally switch off the engine.

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Then Marco removed his expensive watch and placed it on the dashboard.

"We're alone."

Elena folded her arms.

"I've had enough riddles."

Marco looked at her.

"Raphael Cain wasn't a businessman."

"He wasn't a politician."

"He wasn't even officially alive."

He paused.

"He built one of the largest criminal banking networks in North America."

Elena laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"My mother cleaned motel rooms."

"My mother worked two jobs."

"My mother could barely pay rent."

Marco's expression never changed.

"Exactly."

"That was the disguise."

The words struck harder than any scream.

"No."

Marco reached into the glove compartment and removed an old photograph sealed inside a plastic sleeve.

The edges were yellow with age.

Three people stood together.

A younger Rosa Vasquez...

A man Elena had never seen before...

And Marco.

Much younger.

Without the tattoos.

Without the coldness.

Without the dead look in his eyes.

Elena's fingers trembled.

"Where did you get this?"

"I took it."

Her breathing stopped.

"My mother knew you."

"I owed her my life."

Marco leaned back.

"Nineteen years ago, I worked for Raphael Cain."

"I was twenty-four."

"Stupid."

"Loyal."

"Violent."

"I believed loyalty was more important than morality."

His eyes darkened.

"Until the night your mother proved me wrong."

Marco told the story slowly.

Years earlier, Raphael Cain had ordered the execution of an accountant accused of stealing millions.

The accountant wasn't guilty.

He had simply discovered something he wasn't supposed to know.

The money wasn't missing.

It had been secretly diverted into accounts belonging to several powerful politicians.

Raphael wanted every witness erased.

Including the accountant's wife.

Including their six-year-old son.

Marco had been sent to carry out the order.

Instead...

Rosa Vasquez stepped between Marco and the terrified family.

She looked directly into the eyes of one of the deadliest enforcers in America...

...and said only one sentence.

"If you kill innocent children tonight..."

"...you'll spend the rest of your life pretending you're not already dead."

Marco admitted he had never forgotten those words.

He lowered his gun.

Helped the family escape.

And from that moment forward...

Raphael Cain marked Marco as a traitor.

"He wanted me dead."

"He wanted Rosa dead."

"But your mother disappeared before he could find her."

Elena whispered,

"So she ran?"

Marco nodded.

"No."

"She sacrificed everything."

Eighteen years earlier...

Rosa walked into Raphael Cain's private compound alone.

No weapons.

No protection.

Only one offer.

She would disappear forever.

She would never expose what she knew.

She would never contact anyone from that world again.

In exchange...

Raphael would never touch her daughter.

It wasn't mercy.

It was business.

Cain believed children grew into leverage.

Dead children created investigations.

Living children created control.

"So why now?" Elena asked.

"If the deal worked..."

Marco's face hardened.

"Because Raphael Cain died three weeks ago."

A chill swept through the vehicle.

"And when monsters die..."

"...their children inherit their promises."

Suddenly Marco's phone vibrated.

He looked once.

Every muscle in his body froze.

"They found us."

Before Elena could ask how...

A violent explosion tore through the parking garage entrance.

Concrete rained from the ceiling.

Car alarms screamed.

Marco grabbed Elena's wrist.

"Run!"

Behind the smoke...

Six armed men stepped through the dust.

One of them smiled.

Then said something that made Marco's face lose all color.

"Raphael's son says hello..."

"...and he'd like his sister back."

Elena stopped running.

May you like

"My..."

"...what?"
