CHAPTER 4 — THE SIN MARCO COULD NEVER ESCAPE

Elena couldn't breathe.

Marco's confession echoed through the underground vault.

"I'm the one who killed the man you believed was your father."

The words struck harder than the gun aimed at his chest.

Lucien Cain smiled, clearly savoring the moment.

"You finally told her," he said. "Only eighteen years late."

Elena stared at Marco with tears burning her eyes.

"You lied to me... my whole life."

Marco didn't look away.

"I never wanted to."

"Then why?"

Before he could answer, Lucien fired a single shot.

The bullet slammed into the steel vault door inches from Marco's head, sending sparks across the room.

"I didn't come for a family reunion," Lucien said coldly. "I came for what's inside that journal."

Marco shoved Elena behind a concrete pillar as more armed men flooded into the archive from hidden passages.

Unlike the first attack, these men wore tactical gear with no insignias.

Professionals.

Not gangsters looking for revenge.

They moved like military contractors.

Marco whispered, "Someone powerful is financing them."

Gunfire erupted.

The underground archive became a battlefield.

Marco refused to kill unless he had no other choice. Instead, he disabled attackers with precise shots to weapons and lights, buying Elena enough time to escape deeper into the archive with Sister Catherine.

"There!" Sister Catherine shouted.

Behind a collapsing bookshelf was an emergency tunnel Rosa herself had designed nearly two decades earlier.

Inside, the walls were covered with faded photographs.

Rosa.

Marco.

A little girl with dark curls.

Elena.

One picture stopped her cold.

Marco was teaching seven-year-old Elena how to ride a bicycle.

She had no memory of it.

Sister Catherine quietly explained,

"After your mother disappeared, Marco watched over you from a distance. Different schools. Different neighborhoods. Every birthday."

"He couldn't be your father..."

"...but he loved you like one."

For the first time, Elena realized the greatest lie in her life wasn't hatred.

It was sacrifice.

Marco hadn't abandoned her.

He had disappeared to keep her alive.

As explosions shook the tunnel, Sister Catherine handed Elena the black journal.

"Your mother died protecting this."

"You must finish what she started."

The final page contained only six handwritten words:

Trust no one inside the government.

At that exact moment, Marco burst into the tunnel, blood running down his shoulder.

"We have to move."

"What happened?"

He looked back toward the burning archive.

"Lucien wasn't after us."

"He was after the evidence."

Behind them, flames swallowed eighteen years of hidden secrets.

Only Rosa's journal survived.
