CHAPTER 3 — THE LETTER HER MOTHER DIED TO HIDE

The bunker lights flickered red.

BREACH DETECTED.

Marco handed Elena a pistol.

She stared at it.

"I've never touched one."

"I know."

"Today isn't giving us many choices."

The steel hallway echoed with footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Like whoever approached already knew they had won.

Marco activated hidden cameras.

Only one person appeared on the screen.

Lucien Cain.

Alone.

No bodyguards.

No weapon visible.

He simply walked toward the bunker door with his hands in his pockets.

"That's impossible," Sister Catherine whispered.

"He never travels alone."

Marco frowned.

"Exactly."

"It's a distraction."

At that exact second...

Explosions rocked the opposite side of the bunker.

The real attack had already begun.

Smoke filled the ventilation shafts.

Automatic defenses activated.

Gunfire echoed through the tunnels.

Marco shoved Elena toward a hidden elevator.

"Take Sister Catherine."

"What about you?"

"I made Rosa one promise."

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"I intend to keep it."

The elevator descended beneath the city.

Far deeper than Elena imagined possible.

When the doors opened...

She stared in disbelief.

An underground archive stretched beneath the old hotel.

Thousands of files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Passports.

Names.

Entire governments could have been destroyed with what was hidden there.

At the center stood a massive vault.

The brass key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

Inside rested only three objects.

A DNA report.

A black leather journal.

And a video recorder.

Elena pressed play.

Her mother's face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Crying.

"My beautiful girl..."

"If you've opened this..."

"...then Marco kept his promise longer than I ever dreamed."

She smiled through tears.

"You're probably wondering who your father was."

She inhaled deeply.

"It wasn't Raphael Cain."

"It wasn't any criminal."

"It was the only honest man I ever loved."

She held up a photograph.

Elena gasped.

The man standing beside Rosa...

was Marco.

Young.

Smiling.

Without tattoos.

Without scars.

Without darkness.

The room became completely silent.

"No..." Elena whispered.

Marco...

wasn't simply her protector.

He wasn't just her mother's old friend.

He had been the love Rosa sacrificed...

the man who had raised Elena in secret for years...

and the father she'd believed abandoned her all her life.

At that exact moment...

The vault lights suddenly shut off.

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

Lucien Cain stepped from the shadows.

Smiling.

"I've waited eighteen years..."

"...for this family reunion."

He raised a pistol.

Then looked directly at Marco.

"Tell your daughter..."

"...why you really disappeared."

Marco slowly lowered his weapon.

His face filled with unbearable regret.

"Because..."

May you like

"...I'm the one who killed the man she always believed was her father."

Elena's entire world collapsed in one sentence.
