CHAPTER 2 — The Photograph That Should Never Have Existed

Tristan spent the entire night staring at the photograph.
The timestamp was authentic.
The location was authentic.
Even the old Bellamy estate visible behind Emma matched property records.
Yet the image itself made no sense.
Emma looked sixteen.
Young.
Innocent.
Smiling beside his late father, Richard Bellamy...
...as if they had known each other for years.
But Richard Bellamy had never mentioned her.
Not once.
By sunrise, Tristan had only one question.
Who was Emma Carter?
The answer became stranger with every hour.
His investigators found Emma had grown up in foster care after losing her parents in what records described as an "unavoidable house fire."
No surviving relatives.
No inheritance.
No suspicious financial history.
Nothing.
Almost...
Too clean.
Meanwhile, Emma knew none of this.
She simply continued working impossible shifts while Eleanor recovered faster than expected.
The older woman insisted Emma sit with her during lunch.
"You work too hard," Eleanor scolded.
"And you flirt too little."
Emma nearly spilled her coffee.
"I don't flirt."
"You should."
Emma laughed.
"I barely sleep."
"Exactly why you need someone rich."
Both women burst into laughter.
Standing outside the room...
Tristan heard every word.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
He smiled.
It was the first genuine smile his bodyguards had seen in months.
Then everything changed.
A Code Blue alarm echoed through the hospital.
A middle-aged visitor collapsed in the lobby.
Doctors rushed forward.
Several nurses froze.
Emma didn't.
She sprinted across the hallway before anyone else moved.
No hesitation.
No panic.
Only instinct.
"Start compressions!"
She dropped to her knees.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Three.
The man's heartbeat refused to return.
Visitors began crying.
Someone whispered it was hopeless.
Emma ignored them.
She continued.
Her hands bled against the patient's ribs.
Sweat poured down her face.
Finally—
The monitor beeped.
A pulse.
The entire lobby erupted into relieved applause.
Emma didn't celebrate.
She quietly stood...
Apologized for delaying everyone's hallway traffic...
And walked away to wash the blood from her hands.
Tristan had witnessed everything.
Every second.
For the first time since his father's death...
He felt something impossible.
Respect.
Not because she had saved a life.
But because she expected nothing in return.
That evening Eleanor smiled knowingly.
"I've never seen you watch anyone like that."
"I'm observing an employee."
"No."
She shook her head gently.
"You're protecting someone."
Before Tristan could answer...
His phone vibrated.
Encrypted.
Priority One.
Only board members possessed that number.
He opened the message.
One sentence.
STOP INVESTIGATING EMMA CARTER.
Another message arrived instantly.
YOUR FATHER DIED BECAUSE HE ASKED THE SAME QUESTIONS.
Tristan's blood ran cold.
He looked toward Emma's hospital floor.
Someone powerful had been watching them.
Watching her.
Watching him.
Then security cameras inside the hospital suddenly went black.
Exactly forty-seven seconds.
Just long enough...
For an unknown woman wearing a nurse's uniform to quietly enter Emma's locker room.
When the cameras came back online...
The woman had vanished.
So had Emma's personnel file.
And taped inside her now-empty locker...
Was an old envelope.
Across the front, written in faded blue ink, were six chilling words.
"Give this to Tristan. Trust no one."
Emma hadn't even arrived yet.
Someone else already knew she would.
And somewhere in Manhattan...
May you like
A secret buried for twenty years had finally awakened.
