CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Room Beneath Bellamy Manor

Neither Emma nor Tristan spoke during the drive.
Rain hammered against the windows of the SUV.
This time...
Emma wasn't asleep.
She watched the city lights blur into streaks of gold and white, wondering how her ordinary life had collapsed in less than a week.
Finally Tristan broke the silence.
"My father never trusted anyone."
"He trusted someone."
Emma looked down at the envelope.
"Apparently... he trusted my family."
Tristan nodded once.
"That's what scares me."
Instead of returning to Bellamy Tower, the SUV drove north.
Forty minutes later, iron gates slowly opened.
Bellamy Manor emerged from the darkness.
The estate looked more like a fortress than a home.
Stone walls.
Ancient oak trees.
Armed security.
History hidden behind wealth.
Inside the library, Tristan carefully unfolded the old letter.
Only half the page contained writing.
The rest had been burned.
Richard Bellamy's handwriting was unmistakable.
If you're reading this, I failed.
Emma must never learn who she really is until she is old enough to choose for herself.
The Bellamy fortune was never the prize. She was.
Emma stared at the words.
"What does that mean?"
Before Tristan could answer...
The brass key slipped from the envelope and landed on the hardwood floor.
Clink.
Both of them looked down.
A tiny engraving shimmered under the lamp.
B-17
Tristan's eyes widened.
"I know that mark."
He hurried toward an enormous bookshelf and pressed three hidden switches.
The room trembled.
Ancient gears groaned beneath the floor.
Slowly...
The bookshelf swung open.
Behind it...
A narrow stone staircase descended into darkness.
Emma whispered,
"There's a basement?"
Tristan shook his head.
"My grandfather told everyone this room was destroyed decades ago."
"It wasn't."
They descended together.
The air grew colder with every step.
At the bottom waited a steel vault.
The brass key fit perfectly.
With a loud metallic click...
The heavy door opened.
Inside were shelves filled with dusty boxes.
Old passports.
Birth certificates.
Photographs.
Financial ledgers.
And in the center of the room...
A single videotape labeled:
FOR EMMA CARTER
Neither of them noticed the tiny blinking red light hidden above the vault door.
Someone else was watching.
Miles away, inside a private penthouse, an elderly man smiled as the live feed appeared on his screen.
"So..."
he whispered.
"They finally found the vault."
He pressed a secure phone.
"Begin Phase Two."
Across the city, black SUVs quietly left three separate underground garages.
Their destination...
Bellamy Manor.
Back in the hidden vault, Emma inserted the videotape into an old player.
Static filled the screen.
Then a man's face appeared.
Richard Bellamy.
Older.
Terrified.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this..."
he said.
"...then I'm already dead."
He paused.
Tears filled his eyes.
"Emma..."
"You are not who you think you are."
The screen suddenly went black.
Every light inside the vault shut off.
Above them...
The sound of gunfire exploded through Bellamy Manor.
May you like
Someone had come to make sure the truth never left that room.
