CHAPTER 9 — The Last Bellamy

The headlights surrounded the cabin like a ring of fire.
No one spoke.
Inside, every Bellamy security officer raised a weapon.
Outside, nearly thirty black SUVs idled silently beneath the towering pines.
Then one vehicle door opened.
An elderly man stepped out.
Perfectly tailored black overcoat.
Silver hair.
Calm blue eyes.
No body armor.
No visible weapon.
He looked less like a criminal...
...and more like the kind of man who could own half of Wall Street.
James Blackwood.
Or rather...
Gabriel Bellamy.
He walked toward the cabin alone.
"No one shoots," Tristan ordered.
Emma looked at him in disbelief.
"He tried to kill us."
"I know."
"But I need answers more than revenge."
The front door slowly opened.
Gabriel entered without fear.
His eyes never left Emma.
"So..."
he said quietly,
"the little girl survived after all."
Emma stepped forward.
"You murdered my family."
Gabriel's expression remained calm.
"No."
"I murdered monsters."
Silence filled the room.
Sarah stood up despite her injured shoulder.
"Don't listen to him."
Gabriel looked at her with genuine sadness.
"You still blame me."
"You burned our house!"
Sarah shouted.
"No."
Gabriel replied.
"I arrived too late."
Everyone froze.
He slowly reached inside his coat.
Bellamy security immediately aimed their rifles.
Instead of a weapon...
Gabriel removed a worn leather journal.
He gently placed it on the table.
"Richard gave me this."
Tristan frowned.
"My father hated you."
Gabriel shook his head.
"He loved me."
"He died believing I would finish what he started."
Emma opened the journal.
Every page was handwritten by Richard Bellamy.
The final entry stopped her cold.
If anything happens to me, Gabriel is the only man I trust to protect Emma. Even Tristan must never know until the truth is safe.
Tristan stared at the page.
His father had written every word.
"This..."
he whispered,
"...can't be real."
"It is."
Gabriel looked him directly in the eyes.
"Victor Hawthorne forged the evidence."
"He manipulated every investigation."
"He wanted all of us hunting the wrong enemy."
Emma's entire world tilted again.
"So Victor..."
"...started everything?"
Gabriel nodded.
"He wanted one thing."
"You."
Emma blinked.
"Why?"
Gabriel slowly turned toward the fireplace.
Then he said the one sentence no one expected.
"Because you inherited something far more valuable than money."
He reached into his pocket and placed a tiny encrypted flash drive beside Richard's journal.
"It contains proof of every politician, judge, banker, and billionaire Victor Hawthorne bribed over the last thirty years."
Emma frowned.
"Why give it to me?"
Gabriel smiled sadly.
"Because only one name unlocks it."
Emma Carter.
Her identity wasn't simply hidden.
It had been built into the encryption itself decades earlier.
Richard had prepared for this moment long before his death.
Before anyone could say another word...
A missile exploded against the mountainside.
The cabin shook violently.
Victor Hawthorne's convoy had arrived.
And this time...
He wasn't coming to negotiate.
May you like
He was coming to erase every witness forever.
