CHAPTER 1 — The Man Everyone Had Already Given Up On

Emily Carter had stopped believing that life could surprise her.
At twenty-six, she worked double shifts as a private nurse, slept four hours a night, and carried a folder filled with unpaid hospital bills that had belonged to her late mother.
Every collection notice felt like another reminder that grief was expensive.
Her younger brother, Liam, had just been accepted into engineering school, but tuition was due in three weeks.
Emily had exactly $143 left in her bank account.
So when the agency called about an unusual assignment, she listened.
"The patient is unconscious."
"How long?"
"Twenty-eight months."
She hesitated.
"There are... additional responsibilities."
"What kind?"
"Complete personal care."
Silence.
"The salary is one hundred thousand dollars for six months."
Emily nearly dropped her phone.
"What's the catch?"
"The last seven nurses quit."
"Why?"
"No one ever stays."
The line went quiet.
Then the coordinator whispered,
"You'll understand."
The following Monday, a black luxury SUV picked her up before sunrise.
Instead of a hospital, it stopped outside Whitmore Medical Estate—a private medical residence owned by billionaire businessman Alexander Whitmore.
The mansion looked more like a presidential compound than a healthcare facility.
Armed security officers guarded every entrance.
Fingerprint scanners protected every hallway.
Cameras followed every movement.
Emily signed twelve confidentiality agreements before she even saw the patient.
Dr. Howard Benson, Alexander's attending physician, greeted her with an expression that looked more exhausted than hopeful.
"Mr. Whitmore suffered severe brain trauma after a helicopter crash."
"Any family?"
His expression hardened.
"His wife... Victoria Whitmore."
Something about the pause bothered Emily.
"And?"
"She visits when photographers are present."
Room 101 occupied an entire wing.
Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Fresh flowers stood beside the bed.
Classical music played softly.
Alexander Whitmore lay perfectly still.
Thirty-nine years old.
Athletic build.
Strong jaw.
Dark hair carefully maintained.
If not for the ventilator and feeding tube, he looked like someone taking a peaceful afternoon nap.
Emily stared.
"This man built a five-billion-dollar empire..."
Now he couldn't even blink.
She gently adjusted his blanket.
"Hi."
No response.
"I'm Emily."
Silence.
"I guess we'll be spending a lot of time together."
Days became weeks.
Emily treated him exactly as if he could hear every word.
She shaved him carefully.
Read newspaper headlines aloud.
Described the weather.
Complained about hospital coffee.
Told him stories about Liam's terrible cooking.
Sometimes she laughed.
Sometimes she cried.
She never realized someone else was watching.
Every evening, Victoria Whitmore reviewed security footage from her office.
She skipped every medical procedure.
But she always watched Emily.
Not because she cared about Alexander.
Because she feared something.
One afternoon Victoria finally appeared.
Elegant.
Expensive.
Perfect.
She entered wearing white designer heels that echoed across the marble floor.
She never looked at her husband.
Instead she looked directly at Emily.
"You seem... attached."
Emily smiled politely.
"I believe patients deserve kindness."
Victoria's smile never reached her eyes.
"He's already gone."
Emily answered quietly.
"His heart is still beating."
For just a second...
Victoria's expression cracked.
Then she leaned closer.
"Don't mistake breathing for living."
She walked away.
Emily couldn't explain why those words chilled her.
Nearly a month passed.
Nothing changed.
Until Tuesday morning.
It was time for Alexander's routine hygiene care.
Emily washed her hands, put on gloves, and gently removed the blanket.
She carefully changed the bedding.
Lifted him slightly.
Reached for a clean diaper.
Then—
She froze.
Her eyes locked onto the inside of Alexander's left thigh.
A deep purple bruise.
Fresh.
Not old.
Not accidental.
And hidden beneath the diaper where no one would ever normally see it.
Her pulse quickened.
She leaned closer.
The bruise wasn't alone.
Tiny needle marks surrounded it.
Perfectly spaced.
Repeated.
As if someone had been injecting him there over and over again...
In complete secret.
Emily whispered,
"Who keeps injecting you..."
Just then—
The heart monitor suddenly beeped.
Alexander's right index finger...
Moved.
Only once.
Barely a centimeter.
But Emily saw it.
She looked up in disbelief.
Then the bedroom door slowly opened.
Victoria Whitmore was standing there.
Smiling.
May you like
"I was wondering..."
"...what exactly you've noticed."
