CHAPTER 2 — The Millionaire Was Never as Helpless as Everyone Believed

Emily forced herself not to look back at Alexander's leg.

She slowly pulled the blanket into place, removed her gloves, and smiled at Victoria as though nothing unusual had happened.

"Just finishing his morning care."

Victoria studied her face for several long seconds.

"You've adjusted well."

"I'm trying my best."

"I hope you understand that everything in this room is confidential."

Emily nodded.

"Of course."

Victoria walked to the bedside and casually brushed a hand across her husband's shoulder. To anyone watching, it looked like the loving gesture of a devoted wife.

But Emily noticed something disturbing.

Victoria's fingers quietly slipped beneath the blanket.

When she pulled her hand away, she was holding an empty syringe cap hidden inside her sleeve.

She left without another word.

Emily's stomach tightened.

Someone had been giving Alexander injections that weren't listed in his medical chart.

That night Emily couldn't sleep.

She reviewed every medication record stored in the hospital computer.

Everything matched perfectly.

No missing doses.

No unauthorized prescriptions.

No unexplained treatments.

Officially, nothing was wrong.

Which meant someone had altered the records...

Or someone very powerful wanted those injections to remain invisible.

The following morning Emily arrived earlier than usual.

She quietly entered Alexander's room before the doctors made their rounds.

As she adjusted his pillow, she leaned close to his ear.

"I don't know if you can hear me..."

"...but if you're still in there..."

"...please give me a sign."

Silence.

Emily smiled sadly.

"I guess I'm talking to myself again."

She reached for his hand.

Then...

She felt it.

A faint pressure.

So light that another person might have ignored it.

Alexander's fingers were squeezing hers.

Not by accident.

Not because of a muscle spasm.

One squeeze.

Then another.

Emily's heart nearly stopped.

She quickly checked the monitors.

Everything appeared normal.

She looked back at Alexander.

His face remained motionless.

But a single tear slowly escaped the corner of his closed eye.

Emily covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.

"You can hear me..."

Before she could say another word, footsteps echoed outside.

She immediately released his hand.

Dr. Benson entered with two specialists.

Emily decided to stay silent.

If someone inside this estate was deliberately keeping Alexander unconscious, she had no idea whom she could trust.

Later that afternoon, Emily began inspecting Alexander's body more carefully during his routine care.

Hidden beneath his shoulder blade...

Another tiny puncture mark.

Behind his knee...

A healing bruise.

Along his lower back...

Evidence of repeated injections.

Someone had intentionally chosen places hidden beneath clothing and bedding.

Places no visitor would ever notice.

Emily discreetly photographed every mark with her phone.

Just as she slipped it back into her pocket...

The room lights suddenly went dark.

Only for two seconds.

When they returned...

A small folded piece of paper rested on Alexander's blanket.

Emily stared in disbelief.

She was certain it hadn't been there before.

With trembling hands she unfolded it.

Only four handwritten words appeared.

DON'T TRUST THE DOCTORS.

She spun toward the hallway.

Nobody.

The security cameras continued moving silently above the ceiling.

Someone inside the mansion was secretly trying to help her.

Or someone was setting a trap.

That evening Victoria hosted a charity gala downstairs.

Reporters photographed her beside giant portraits of Alexander.

She smiled for every camera.

"My husband is still fighting."

"He inspires us every day."

The guests applauded.

Meanwhile...

Only one floor above them...

The man everyone believed was unconscious slowly moved his thumb beneath the blanket.

No cameras saw it.

Except one.

A hidden camera concealed inside an air vent.

And somewhere inside the mansion...

A mysterious person watched the footage in real time.

Then whispered,

May you like

"He's waking up..."

"And she'll ruin everything if we don't stop her first."
