Chapter 1

Little Mateo was only eleven days old when Valeria walked through the automatic doors of an imposing glass tower in Santa Fe, the corporate and financial heart of Mexico City.
She wasn't wearing designer clothes to impress anyone.
She wasn't there to earn sympathy.
She wore a simple cream blouse, dark maternity pants that still hadn't fully fit after giving birth, and a navy-blue coat wrapped tightly around the baby carrier protecting her newborn from the cold morning wind.
Her son.
Not "Alejandro Castañeda's son."
Not "The heir to the Castañeda real estate empire."
Her son.
Because for the last eight months of her pregnancy...
Alejandro had managed to be everywhere in the world...
Except where a husband and future father should have been.
Valeria pressed the elevator button for the 45th floor.
Her posture was straight.
Confident.
Only her right hand betrayed her, trembling ever so slightly.
Years ago...
Alejandro would have noticed that tiny shake and immediately wrapped her in his arms.
But the man he had become...
No longer knew how to read the silent language of his own wife.
The elevator doors opened.
Luxury surrounded her.
Black marble floors.
Italian leather furniture.
A massive arrangement of exotic birds-of-paradise flowers.
A receptionist with the perfectly rehearsed smile expected inside one of the country's most powerful corporations.
"Mrs. Valeria Castañeda," the young woman said politely.
"Mr. Garza is waiting for you in Conference Room Three."
Her eyes drifted for a brief second toward the sleeping baby.
"Please... have a seat for a moment."
Valeria quietly sat on the edge of the sofa.
She gently adjusted Mateo's blanket.
She had breastfed him forty minutes earlier...
Alone...
In the underground parking garage.
In only eleven days, her entire life had been reduced to tiny windows of time.
Change a diaper.
Feed the baby.
Sleep for an hour.
Survive.
She had also learned something else.
She was far stronger than anyone—including herself—had ever believed.
Three years earlier...
She had married Alejandro Castañeda at a breathtaking agave estate in Jalisco.
Mariachi bands.
Hundreds of wealthy guests.
Endless speeches celebrating everlasting love.
She had been twenty-eight.
Alejandro was thirty-four.
He was charming.
Brilliant.
The kind of businessman who always knew exactly what to say.
Valeria had mistaken that talent...
For genuine love.
The first year felt like a fairy tale.
But during the second year...
Alejandro's construction company exploded into one of Mexico's fastest-growing real estate empires.
Business magazines placed him on their covers.
Exclusive galas in Polanco became routine.
Luxury trips to Miami filled his calendar.
The man Valeria had fallen in love with slowly disappeared...
Replaced by custom-tailored suits...
An oversized ego...
And a phone that buzzed every night at three in the morning.
One evening, standing in the kitchen of their penthouse overlooking Lomas de Chapultepec, Valeria quietly admitted...
"I feel lonely."
Alejandro never even looked up from his phone.
"I've given you the life every woman dreams about."
"Stop exaggerating."
That was his only answer.
Exactly three months later...
Valeria discovered Paola.
Thirty-one years old.
Director of Public Relations.
Her Instagram was filled with luxury vacations...
Designer fashion...
Private jets...
And a beauty so carefully perfected it almost looked artificial.
Valeria never screamed.
She didn't smash crystal glasses.
She didn't cry to her mother-in-law.
She didn't do any of the things people expected from a betrayed wife.
Because that same week...
Holding two positive pregnancy tests in her hands...
She learned she was carrying Alejandro's child.
While Alejandro kept coming home after midnight smelling of another woman's perfume...
Valeria quietly prepared her escape.
She secretly hired the relentless attorney Mr. Garza.
She opened a private bank account in her own name.
She rented a modest apartment in Del Valle.
She carefully collected bank statements...
Property records...
Financial documents...
And every piece of evidence she would someday need.
Then...
She waited.
Alejandro didn't discover the pregnancy until she was already seven months along.
One evening...
Valeria removed her oversized sweater.
Her rounded belly left no room for denial.
Alejandro froze.
His face turned pale.
"How... how far along are you?" he whispered.
"Seven months."
Her voice was ice cold.
"And I don't need you pretending to be a happy family."
"I need a divorce."
Now...
Standing on the forty-fifth floor...
The conference room door slowly opened.
Mr. Garza...
A sixty-year-old attorney with the sharp eyes of a hawk...
Motioned for her to come inside.
Valeria stepped into the room.
Across the enormous mahogany table sat Alejandro's lawyer...
A young attorney named Arturo...
Already sweating through his expensive suit.
At the head of the table...
Alejandro impatiently glanced at his luxury watch.
But he wasn't alone.
Sitting confidently beside him...
Her legs elegantly crossed...
Was Paola.
His mistress.
Valeria stopped walking.
Alejandro looked up.
The arrogant confidence vanished from his face the instant he saw the baby carrier.
Little Mateo slept peacefully inside.
The billionaire real estate mogul forgot how to breathe.
Confused...
Paola looked from Alejandro...
To the baby...
Then back again.
For the first time...
Her perfectly composed expression completely shattered.
The silence inside that conference room became almost unbearable.
Looking directly into the eyes of the woman who had helped destroy her marriage...
Valeria knew...
The worst was still to come.

No one in that room could possibly imagine...
What was about to happen next.
