CHAPTER 1 — The Coffee That Changed Two Lives

Rain hammered the streets of downtown Chicago like thousands of tiny warning bells.

At exactly 7:12 a.m., Mara Collins had $18.42, an exhausted smile, and absolutely no idea that she was about to become the reason an empire changed forever.

She believed she was buying a stranger a cup of coffee.

Instead...

...she was unknowingly buying justice.

The stranger accepted the coffee with visible hesitation.

"I don't even know your name."

"Mara."

He nodded.

"Ethan."

He extended his hand.

Unlike most businessmen, his handshake wasn't dominant.

It was careful.

Almost grateful.

"You've rescued me from public humiliation."

She laughed.

"You were losing a fight against a coffee menu."

"I'm better with billion-dollar contracts."

She rolled her eyes.

"Sure you are."

He smiled again.

Most people smiled with their mouths.

His reached his eyes.

For the first time in weeks...

Mara forgot she was tired.

Before leaving, Ethan reached into his coat.

"I'd like to repay you."

She immediately shook her head.

"No."

"It wasn't expensive."

"It wasn't about the money."

"Then why?"

She looked out the rain-covered window.

"Because once...someone helped my mom when nobody else would."

Her voice softened.

"I promised myself I'd do the same whenever I could."

Something inside Ethan shifted.

People constantly offered him gifts.

Respect.

Luxury.

Fear.

Nobody had offered him kindness in years.

Not without expecting something back.

"Then at least let me know where you work."

She laughed.

"So you can mail me four dollars?"

"I might."

She scribbled the company name onto a napkin.

Ellis Corporate Solutions.

"Accounting department."

He folded the napkin carefully.

"I won't forget."

She assumed he was simply polite.

She never imagined...

...he meant every word.

At 8:58 a.m., Mara rushed into the glass headquarters of Ellis Corporate Solutions.

Her manager...

Graham Ellis...

was already yelling.

Again.

"Late."

"It isn't even nine."

"It will be."

Employees lowered their heads.

Nobody defended her.

Nobody ever defended anyone.

Because Graham ruled through fear.

He mocked assistants.

He humiliated interns.

He threatened mothers with termination whenever they asked for time off.

Everyone hated him.

Nobody challenged him.

Rumor said he was protected by someone on the board.

Rumor said he couldn't be fired.

Rumor...

...was about to die.

At 9:31 a.m., every executive received the same email.

Mandatory emergency board meeting.

Attendance required.

Failure unacceptable.

Nobody knew why.

Except one man.

Ethan.

When the elevator doors opened...

the entire executive floor stood.

Not because they recognized a billionaire.

Not because they recognized a celebrity.

Because they recognized...

their owner.

Mara froze.

Coffee stranger.

Impossible.

Graham frowned.

"You know him?"

"No..."

Ethan looked directly at Mara.

Then smiled.

"Actually..."

"I do."

Silence exploded across the room.

And Graham suddenly realized...

...the young woman he'd spent two years humiliating knew someone far more dangerous than he ever imagined.

But Ethan hadn't come to reward Mara.

He had come because during the flight back from Switzerland...

someone uncovered a fraud worth $480 million inside his own company.

May you like

And every piece of evidence...

pointed directly toward Graham Ellis.
