CHAPTER 5 — The Billion-Dollar Secret

Ethan insisted Mara move into a secure company apartment.

She refused.

"I won't live my life hiding."

"You may not have a choice."

That night, security doubled around her building.

It still wasn't enough.

At exactly 2:13 a.m., the power went out.

Every light disappeared.

The hallway outside Mara's apartment became completely silent.

Too silent.

Then...

footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone inserted a key into her lock.

Mara grabbed the heavy flashlight she kept beside her bed.

The doorknob slowly turned.

Before the door could open—

Glass shattered downstairs.

Security alarms exploded through the building.

Whoever had entered the hallway immediately ran.

By the time guards arrived...

they found nothing.

Except one black leather glove.

Inside the glove...

was stitched the logo of a private investment company called Hawthorne Capital.

Ethan stared at it for a long time.

"I know this company."

"What is it?"

"It doesn't officially exist anymore."

The next morning Ethan flew to New York.

He met with an old friend who had worked in financial intelligence.

After reviewing the evidence, the man quietly closed the file.

"Ethan..."

"You're chasing ghosts."

"No."

"I'm chasing whoever stole one hundred seventy million dollars."

His friend slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They stole much more than money."

He slid one classified document across the table.

Ethan's face changed instantly.

Because Hawthorne Capital had secretly purchased shares in Ellis Corporate Solutions through dozens of fake corporations.

Enough shares...

to seize control of the company.

The fraud had never been about money.

It had always been about ownership.

Someone wanted Ethan's entire empire.

Back in Chicago, Mara finally opened locker 417 using Evelyn Harper's silver key.

Inside she found only one object.

An old leather notebook.

Every page contained names.

Judges.

Politicians.

Bank executives.

CEOs.

Alongside each name...

were payment amounts.

Dates.

Offshore accounts.

Bribes.

The notebook wasn't evidence of corporate corruption.

It was evidence of an entire criminal network.

And someone had just realized...

Mara now possessed it.
