CHAPTER 4 — The Enemy Nobody Saw Coming

Three weeks after Daniel Whitmore's arrest, Ellis Corporate Solutions looked like a different company.

Employees laughed in hallways again.

People left the office before midnight.

The break room finally had fresh coffee instead of stale excuses.

For the first time in years...

hope had returned.

Mara believed the nightmare was over.

She was wrong.

Because every empire has enemies.

And the most dangerous ones...

never attack from the front.

At 8:15 on Monday morning, Ethan Carter walked into the executive boardroom carrying a thin black folder.

Only six directors had been invited.

No assistants.

No lawyers.

No phones.

The atmosphere felt colder than winter.

"We recovered approximately three hundred and twelve million dollars," Ethan announced.

"But nearly one hundred seventy million is still missing."

The room fell silent.

"That money didn't disappear."

"It was moved."

One director frowned.

"You think Daniel had another partner?"

Ethan slowly looked around the table.

"I know he did."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone suddenly wondered...

whether the traitor was sitting beside them.

Meanwhile, Mara received an anonymous package.

No return address.

Inside...

a single photograph.

It showed Ethan shaking hands with Daniel Whitmore.

The date printed underneath shocked her.

Six years earlier.

On the back, someone had written only one sentence.

Trusting him will destroy you.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Was Ethan hiding something?

Or was someone trying to destroy the only person she believed in?

That afternoon, another surprise arrived.

An elderly woman asked for Mara at reception.

She introduced herself as Evelyn Harper.

Daniel Whitmore's ex-wife.

"I don't have much time," Evelyn whispered.

"They're watching me."

Mara frowned.

"Who's watching you?"

"The people Daniel was afraid of."

She placed a small silver key on the table.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...don't let them find what's inside locker 417."

Before Mara could ask another question...

Evelyn hurried away.

Across the street...

someone photographed the entire meeting.

And somewhere inside a parked black sedan...

a voice quietly ordered,

"Move tonight."

At 9:48 p.m., Mara's apartment doorbell rang.

Nobody was there.

Only another envelope.

Inside...

was a newspaper clipping.

WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER CORPORATE FRAUD TESTIMONY

Across the headline...

someone had written in red ink.

YOU'RE NEXT.

Mara realized the corruption inside Ellis Corporate Solutions had never truly ended.

May you like

She had only uncovered...

the first layer.
