CHAPTER 1 – THE WIFE WHO NEVER EXISTED

Elena never imagined that the sweetest surprise of her life would become the beginning of the cruelest betrayal.
For forty years, she believed she knew the man she married.
She knew how he liked his coffee.
She knew the sound of his footsteps before he opened the front door.
She knew the tired smile he wore every evening after "another long day at the office."
Or at least...
She thought she did.
What Elena didn't know...
Was that for the last fifteen years, someone else had been living the life that was supposed to belong to her.
And one ordinary Tuesday morning...
A complete stranger would destroy her entire world with a single sentence.
Mexico City awakened beneath a blanket of soft October sunlight.
Traffic crawled along Paseo de la Reforma.
Street vendors prepared fresh tamales.
Office workers hurried through subway stations while cafés filled with the comforting aroma of roasted coffee beans.
Inside a quiet suburban home, Elena followed the same morning routine she had repeated for decades.
At exactly six o'clock...
She placed Jorge's favorite ceramic mug beside his breakfast.
Two eggs.
Whole-wheat toast.
Fresh orange juice.
Coffee with exactly two spoonfuls of sugar.
She smiled as she watched him button his navy-blue shirt.
Even after forty years...
Preparing breakfast still made her feel needed.
Jorge barely looked up from his phone.
"The board meeting may run late," he said.
"I probably won't be home until after nine."
Elena simply nodded.
"I'll keep dinner warm."
He leaned over...
Placed a quick kiss on her cheek...
Grabbed his leather briefcase...
And disappeared through the front door.
The silence that followed had become the soundtrack of her marriage.
Years earlier...
She would have begged him to stay for another cup of coffee.
Now...
She had learned that asking questions only led to polite excuses.
So she stopped asking.
As Elena folded laundry later that morning, one of Jorge's suit jackets slipped from the closet hanger.
A cream-colored envelope slid onto the hardwood floor.
She bent down and picked it up.
Embossed in elegant gold lettering were the words:
MONTEIRO GLOBAL HOLDINGS
40TH ANNIVERSARY GALA
Employees and their spouses are cordially invited...
Saturday, 7:00 PM.
Her heart skipped.
Spouses.
She hadn't attended one of Jorge's corporate events in nearly twelve years.
Every invitation had come with an explanation.
Too formal.
Too boring.
Too many clients.
Too much standing.
"You'd hate it," Jorge always said.
She believed him.
Until today.
For the first time in years...
Hope quietly returned.
Maybe he hadn't stopped loving her.
Maybe life had simply buried romance beneath deadlines and responsibilities.
Perhaps one thoughtful surprise...
Could remind him of the young couple they once were.
She opened the wardrobe.
Carefully moving dresses she hadn't worn in years.
Finally...
She found the floral dress Jorge once called his favorite.
The one he said made her eyes sparkle.
She wondered...
Would he still remember saying that?
Standing before the mirror, Elena brushed her silver hair into an elegant bun.
She added pearl earrings.
A delicate necklace.
Then hesitated.
A forgotten tube of bright red lipstick rested inside the bathroom drawer.
She laughed softly.
"I haven't worn this in forever."
She applied it anyway.
For a brief moment...
The woman staring back wasn't sixty.
She was twenty-three again.
Young.
Hopeful.
Deeply in love.
On the way downtown...
She stopped at the tiny chocolate shop where Jorge had always bought anniversary gifts.
The elderly owner recognized her immediately.
"Buying his favorite again?"
Elena smiled proudly.
"He always says no one chooses chocolate better than I do."
The old shopkeeper wrapped the dark chocolate truffles in elegant gold paper.
"If every wife loved like you do..."
He smiled warmly.
"The world would be a kinder place."
Neither of them knew...
That those chocolates would never reach Jorge's hands.
The headquarters of Monteiro Global rose forty stories above the city.
Its mirrored glass reflected clouds drifting across the afternoon sky.
Luxury cars lined the entrance.
Executives hurried through revolving doors while receptionists greeted visitors with polished smiles.
Elena suddenly felt underdressed.
She tightened her grip on the gift box.
Her heart pounded like a nervous teenager about to confess her first love.
She approached the reception desk.
"Good morning."
"I'm here to surprise my husband."
"Jorge Monteiro."
"The Chief Financial Officer."
The receptionist smiled politely.
"One moment, please."
She gestured toward the security desk.
The older security guard stood up slowly.
His nametag read:
Ricardo Alvarez
He accepted Elena's identification card.
Read her name.
Then looked back at her.
His smile disappeared.
His forehead creased with confusion.
He looked at the ID again.
Then at Elena.
Then once more at the computer screen.
Silence stretched longer than it should have.
Finally...
He spoke.
"You said..."
"You're Mr. Monteiro's wife?"
Elena laughed softly.
"Yes."
"We've been married almost forty years."
Ricardo swallowed.
There was pity in his eyes.
The kind of pity someone shows before delivering terrible news.
"I'm sorry..."
"But that can't be correct."
The words struck Elena like ice water.
"I'm afraid I don't understand."
Ricardo lowered his voice.
"I've worked in this building for nearly eighteen years."
"I know Mr. Monteiro very well."
"And his wife..."
He hesitated.
"...comes here almost every day."
Elena forced a smile.
"You must be mistaken."
"My husband leaves home every morning."
"We've lived together since 1986."
Ricardo slowly shook his head.
"No, ma'am."
"I've personally greeted Mrs. Monteiro hundreds of times."
"And..."
His voice nearly broke.
"...she isn't you."
The lobby suddenly felt colder.
Every conversation around Elena faded into silence.
The polished marble floor seemed to sway beneath her feet.
Her fingers tightened around the chocolate box until the ribbon dug into her skin.
She wanted to argue.
To scream.
To laugh.
Surely this was some misunderstanding.
Perhaps another executive shared Jorge's surname.
Perhaps the guard was new.
Perhaps...
Then Ricardo quietly glanced toward the elevators.
"They're opening."
"You should look."
The stainless-steel doors slid apart with a soft metallic whisper.
Out stepped a woman in an elegant ivory pantsuit.
She looked no older than forty-five.
Confident.
Graceful.
Perfectly at ease.
Employees smiled as she passed.
One accountant waved.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Monteiro!"
She returned the greeting naturally.
"Tell Jorge I'll be back before the investors arrive."
Another receptionist smiled.
"You two make such a wonderful couple."
The woman laughed.
"I'll tell him you said that."
She walked directly past Elena.
Without even noticing her.
Without hesitation.
Without doubt.
As though she truly belonged there.
As though Elena...
Didn't.
The gift box slipped from Elena's trembling fingers.
Dark chocolate truffles scattered across the gleaming marble floor.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Ricardo bent down to help collect them.
But Elena couldn't take her eyes off the woman disappearing through the revolving doors.
A single question echoed inside her mind.
If that woman was Mrs. Monteiro...
Then who had Elena been for the last forty years?
Before Ricardo could say another word...
His walkie-talkie suddenly crackled.
"Security to lobby."
"Mr. Monteiro is coming down."
Ricardo froze.
The color drained from his face.
He looked at Elena.
Then toward the elevator.
Then whispered only four words...
"Ma'am..."
May you like
"You need to hide."
