SHE BROUGHT CHOCOLATES TO SURPRISE HER HUSBAND... THEN A SECURITY GUARD EXPOSED THE DOUBLE LIFE HE HAD HIDDEN FOR 15 YEARS CHAPTER 5 – THE VOICE ON THE TAPE

"Patient Number Four."
The words echoed through the underground archive.
Elena's fingers tightened around the old cassette tape until her knuckles turned white.
She stared at the elderly man standing between the rows of filing cabinets.
He wasn't armed.
He wasn't threatening.
If anything...
He looked relieved.
As though he'd spent years waiting for this exact moment.
"I'm sorry," Elena whispered, shaking her head. "You have the wrong person."
The man smiled sadly.
"No..."
"I finally have the right one."
He stepped into the light.
His lab coat was faded with age.
A worn identification badge hung around his neck.
The photograph on it looked at least twenty years old.
It read:
Dr. Esteban Navarro
Chief Neurologist
Aeternum Human Behavior Institute
The same institute named on the files Elena had just found.
"You know my name," Elena said.
"I've known your name for twenty-three years."
"You volunteered to tell it to me."
"I never met you!"
"No..."
"You don't remember meeting me."
Those words struck even harder.
Not you never met me.
You don't remember.
Dr. Navarro looked toward the basement entrance.
"They'll be here soon."
"If we're going to do this..."
"You need to hear your own voice."
He pointed to the cassette.
"Play it."
"There isn't a cassette player."
He walked to an old wooden cabinet hidden beneath a dusty tarp.
Inside sat a portable tape recorder.
Old-fashioned.
Covered in dust.
Yet when he pressed the power button...
The machine came to life.
He inserted the tape.
The wheels began to spin.
Static filled the room.
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Gentle.
Familiar.
Elena froze.
It was her voice.
"If you're listening to this..."
"Then Project Mirror has already succeeded."
"Or it has failed."
"I'm not sure which outcome frightens me more."
Elena's knees weakened.
"No..."
The voice continued.
"My name is Elena Ramirez."
"Today is April 18."
"If everything goes according to plan..."
"I will soon forget that I ever made this recording."
Tears filled Elena's eyes.
She had never heard these words before.
Yet she recognized every pause.
Every breath.
Every emotion.
It was undeniably her.
"I'm recording this because I don't trust them anymore."
"They promised they were studying memory loss."
"They promised they were trying to help patients with Alzheimer's."
"But that's not what Project Mirror became."
Dr. Navarro closed his eyes.
He looked as though he'd heard this recording a hundred times.
Still...
It hurt every time.
The tape continued.
"At first..."
"We only erased traumatic memories."
"Combat veterans."
"Victims of violent crime."
"Children suffering unbearable grief."
"The results were remarkable."
"People smiled again."
"Families were reunited."
"We believed we were healing broken lives."
A long silence.
Then Elena's recorded voice became shaky.
"Then the investors arrived."
Dr. Navarro whispered,
"They changed everything."
The tape continued.
"They discovered something terrifying."
"If memories can be erased..."
"They can also be replaced."
"A person doesn't need to die..."
"To become someone else."
"All they need..."
"Is a different past."
Elena felt her entire body go numb.
"No..."
She looked desperately at Dr. Navarro.
"This isn't possible."
"I wish it weren't."
The tape continued.
"Project Mirror stopped treating patients."
"It started creating them."
"We built new identities."
"New childhoods."
"New marriages."
"New histories."
"People believed every word because the human brain fills empty spaces better than anyone ever imagined."
Dr. Navarro lowered his head.
"I tried to stop them."
"They removed me from the project."
The recording crackled.
Then Elena heard something that stole the air from her lungs.
"If you're hearing this..."
"Then Jorge betrayed us."
She looked up.
"Betrayed... us?"
The voice continued.
"Jorge wasn't just my husband."
"He was the financial director who approved every phase of Project Mirror."
"He knew exactly what the technology could do."
"He told me he wanted to protect it from the wrong people."
"I believed him."
"I was a fool."
Dr. Navarro spoke quietly.
"You loved him."
"So did everyone."
"What do you mean?"
He didn't answer.
Instead...
He handed Elena a faded photograph from his pocket.
It showed the original research team.
Seven scientists.
One financial executive.
And one young woman standing beside him.
Elena recognized her immediately.
Not because she had seen her before.
Because she was looking into her own younger face.
Standing beside Jorge.
Both wearing laboratory badges.
Both smiling proudly.
Below the photograph someone had handwritten:
PROJECT MIRROR – FOUNDING TEAM
"But..."
Elena whispered.
"I thought I met Jorge in college."
"You didn't."
"You met him here."
"The college story..."
"...was manufactured."
Every cherished memory of their early romance shattered in an instant.
The first date.
The proposal.
The honeymoon.
The funny stories they'd told for decades.
Had any of it been real?
Or had someone carefully written the script of her life...
Until she believed it?
Suddenly...
The tape recorder emitted one final burst of static.
Then Elena's recorded voice returned.
More urgent now.
Almost frightened.
"If I disappear..."
"Don't waste time looking for me."
"They'll already have erased me."
"Find Ledger Twelve."
"It's the only place where they couldn't alter the records."
"The ledger contains every real identity..."
"Every subject..."
"Every replacement..."
"Every payment."
Another pause.
Then the final sentence.
"And if Jorge is still alive..."
"Never let him know..."
"...you remember."
The tape clicked.
Silence.
Before anyone could speak...
The emergency lights throughout the archive suddenly switched on.
A loud mechanical alarm echoed through the basement.
Red lights began flashing across the ceiling.
Dr. Navarro's face turned pale.
"They found the tape."
"How?"
"They've activated a containment protocol."
Heavy steel doors slammed shut somewhere above them.
The sound echoed like thunder through the underground corridors.
Then a cold computerized voice filled the archive.
"Attention."
"Unauthorized access to Project Mirror archives detected."
"Facility lockdown initiated."
"Estimated response time..."
A brief pause.
"...two minutes."
Dr. Navarro grabbed Elena's arm.
"We have to find Ledger Twelve."
"Where is it?"
He looked toward the darkest end of the archive.
"There."
A massive steel vault door slowly emerged beneath the flashing red lights.
Across its surface...
Someone had painted three words in faded black letters.
DO NOT REMEMBER.
As Elena stepped toward the vault...
She suddenly heard another voice.
Not from the speakers.
Not from Dr. Navarro.
A familiar voice behind her.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost amused.
"I was hoping..."
"...you'd choose the chocolates instead."
Elena turned slowly.
Standing at the entrance to the archive...
Perfectly dressed.
Hands in his pockets.
Wearing the same gentle smile she'd trusted for forty years...
May you like
Was Jorge.
