SHE BROUGHT CHOCOLATES TO SURPRISE HER HUSBAND... THEN A SECURITY GUARD EXPOSED THE DOUBLE LIFE HE HAD HIDDEN FOR 15 YEARS CHAPTER 4 – THE ROOM THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The footsteps grew louder.

Steady.

Deliberate.

Not the hurried pace of office workers.

The synchronized rhythm of men who already knew exactly where they were going.

Ricardo glanced at the security monitor.

Four men in dark suits had stepped out of a private elevator that wasn't shown on the public directory.

None wore company ID badges.

Yet every employee who passed them immediately lowered their eyes.

"They're here," Ricardo whispered.

"They never come down themselves."

"Who are they?"

"I don't know their names."

"I've only heard people call them..."

Corporate Security.

"But they're not security."

"They answer only to the executive floor."

A hard knock echoed through the office door.

"Mr. Alvarez."

A calm male voice.

"Open the door."

Ricardo didn't move.

Another knock.

Slightly louder.

"We need to speak with the visitor."

Elena's breathing became shallow.

Visitor.

They hadn't called her by name.

Which meant they weren't sure who she was.

Not yet.

Ricardo leaned toward her.

"There's another exit."

He pointed toward an old maintenance hallway hidden behind rows of surveillance equipment.

"It leads to the basement."

"The storage rooms are down there."

"You have two minutes."

"What about you?"

He smiled sadly.

"I'm sixty-three."

"I'm close to retirement."

"But you've still got a chance to learn the truth."

The knocking became pounding.

"Mr. Alvarez."

"This is your final warning."

Ricardo unlocked the hidden maintenance door.

Before Elena stepped through, he grabbed her arm.

"There is one thing I never told anyone."

She looked back.

"The women..."

"They all came here alone."

"But only one..."

"...ever came back out."

Elena's blood froze.

"What happened to her?"

"I don't know."

"But she wasn't the same."

Without another word, Elena disappeared into the dim hallway.

Ricardo closed the hidden door just as the office entrance burst open.

The last thing Elena heard before the wall muffled the voices was Ricardo shouting,

"She was never here!"

Then came the sound of furniture crashing.

The maintenance corridor smelled of dust and machine oil.

Fluorescent lights flickered overhead.

Most had burned out years earlier.

The deeper she walked...

The quieter the building became.

She reached an old freight elevator.

Out of service.

Beside it was a narrow staircase leading underground.

A rusted sign read:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

She descended.

One floor.

Then another.

The polished corporate headquarters above disappeared, replaced by exposed pipes, concrete walls, and humming electrical panels.

It felt less like an office...

And more like the forgotten skeleton of the building.

At the bottom of the stairs, a faded map hung crooked on the wall.

Storage A-01...

A-02...

B-10...

B-14...

Then...

At the far end...

B-17.

Exactly where Ricardo had told her to go.

The corridor leading to B-17 was strangely clean.

No dust.

No cobwebs.

Someone came here often.

When Elena reached the heavy steel door, she noticed there was no electronic lock.

Only an old brass keyhole.

Her hands trembled as she inserted Ricardo's key.

The lock clicked.

The metal door creaked open.

Darkness.

She searched for a light switch.

Nothing.

Only a thin beam of sunlight filtered through a tiny basement window.

As her eyes adjusted...

She realized the room wasn't a storage room at all.

It was an archive.

Hundreds of cardboard boxes.

Metal filing cabinets.

Shelves stretching from floor to ceiling.

Every box carried the same handwritten label.

PERSONAL.

She opened the nearest box.

Inside...

Were photographs.

Thousands of them.

Family vacations.

Birthday parties.

Christmas dinners.

Wedding anniversaries.

At first glance, they looked ordinary.

Then Elena noticed something impossible.

The woman standing beside Jorge wasn't always the same.

One album showed Sofia.

Another showed Camila.

Another showed Valeria.

Different faces.

Different years.

Yet the background never changed.

The same dining room.

The same beach house.

The same Christmas tree.

Even the family dog appeared in every album.

As though each woman had simply replaced the previous one...

Without changing anything else.

Elena's stomach twisted.

She found another photo.

Then another.

Then suddenly...

Her own face.

She was smiling beside Jorge.

Holding a birthday cake.

Behind them hung a banner reading:

Happy 35th Anniversary!

She stared at it.

She had absolutely no memory of that day.

Yet there she was.

Happy.

Comfortable.

Perfectly in love.

She turned the picture over.

A handwritten note covered the back.

Subject E-04

Memory Integration: Successful

Elena nearly dropped the photograph.

Subject?

Memory integration?

What did that even mean?

She hurried to another cabinet.

Inside were neatly organized folders.

Each labeled with a woman's first name.

Sofia.

Camila.

Valeria.

Elena.

And...

Eight more.

She pulled out her own file.

Inside were dozens of medical reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Blood test results.

Brain scans.

At the top of the first page was a company logo she had never seen before.

AETERNUM HUMAN BEHAVIOR INSTITUTE

Below it...

One line was stamped in bold red letters.

PROJECT MIRROR

Confidential.

Her hands shook violently as she read.

Subject: Elena Ramirez

Phase Four Candidate

Objective: Long-term identity replacement through memory reinforcement.

Estimated adaptation period: 18-24 months.

She couldn't breathe.

Identity replacement?

Memory reinforcement?

This had to be insanity.

A joke.

A forgery.

Yet every page contained her full name.

Her date of birth.

Her signature.

Or something that looked exactly like her signature.

A small envelope slipped from the folder.

Inside was a cassette tape.

Old.

Yellowed with age.

Attached was a handwritten label.

FOR ELENA

PLAY ONLY IF YOU REMEMBER.

She stared at it in silence.

Remember what?

Before she could think further...

A metallic sound echoed behind her.

The basement door slammed shut.

Someone had entered the archive.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Confident.

A man's voice drifted through the shelves.

"You found the files."

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

"I was beginning to wonder..."

"...if you'd ever remember who you really are."

Elena slowly turned toward the darkness.

A tall figure stepped into the narrow strip of light.

It wasn't Jorge.

It wasn't one of the men from Corporate Security.

It was an elderly man wearing a white laboratory coat.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

Around his neck hung an old employee badge.

He smiled as though he had been expecting her for years.

Then he spoke the words that shattered everything Elena thought she knew.

"Welcome back..."

May you like

"...Patient Number Four."
