The fragile peace between Lena and Noah was shattered the very next morning by an unexpected phone call at 8:00 AM.

It wasn't Noah. It wasn't Cass.

It was an unknown number with an uptown Charlotte area code.

“Hello, Ms. Hartwell?” a sharp, professional female voice asked over the line.

“Yes? This is Lena Hartwell.”

“My name is Chloe Vance—no relation to Julian Vance, though we work in the same financial sector. I’m an investigative forensic accountant, and I believe we need to talk about Derek Mallory.”

Lena froze, her coffee mug halting halfway to her mouth. “Chloe? Wait, are you—”

“I’m the woman Derek was cheating on you with,” Chloe said bluntly, her voice laced with sharp contempt. “Or rather, the woman he tried to use as a convenient alibi while he looted client portfolios. Ms. Hartwell, Derek isn't just a narcissist. He’s running a Ponzi scheme through Mallory Financial, and he’s using the municipal zoning project to cover up a five-million-dollar hole in his trust accounts.”

Lena gripped the edge of her kitchen counter, her knuckles turning white. “What are you talking about?”

“I found his ledgers last night while he was asleep,” Chloe said, her tone urgent. “He planned to push the Brightwell Civic Trust into approving that commercial expansion illegally, pocket the developer kickbacks, and skip the country to the Cayman Islands by next month. And guess who he was going to pin the regulatory compliance failure on if the audit hit first?”

A cold dread pooled in Lena’s stomach. “Me.”

“Bingo,” Chloe sighed. “He knew you sat on the final review board. He thought he could manipulate you into signing off on the fast-track paperwork, or failing that, frame you for conflict of interest when the scandal broke. He’s a monster, Lena. I wanted no part of it.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Lena asked, her voice shaking.

“Because I have a professional license, a clean record, and I’m not going down for a fraudster who treats women like disposable trash,” Chloe said firmly. “I’ve already sent the complete file to the federal prosecutor’s office and the SEC. But the zoning board approval is still sitting on your desk. You need to flag it immediately before the board votes on Monday.”

“I will,” Lena said, her voice hardening with sudden, fierce resolve. “Thank you, Chloe.”

She hung up the phone. The shock had vanished, replaced by cold, calculating adrenaline. Derek Mallory thought he could play with her career, her integrity, and her life as if she were a pawn in his game.

He had picked the wrong woman.

And he had definitely picked the wrong enemy.

Within twenty minutes, Lena was sitting across from Cass and the executive director of the Brightwell Civic Trust in a high-stakes emergency conference room.

She slid the encrypted flash drive Chloe had provided—along with her own detailed notes of Derek’s attempted bribe at the office lobby—across the mahogany table.

“This is explosive, Lena,” the director whispered, pale-faced as he scanned the preliminary audit trail. “If this is accurate, Mallory Financial isn’t just facing a zoning violation; they’re looking at federal wire fraud and embezzlement.”

“It’s accurate,” Lena said, her voice unwavering. “And I want to personally present the motion to revoke their development privileges at Monday morning’s public hearing.”

Cass grinned across the table, her eyes flashing with pure vengeance. “Oh, this is going to be cinematic. Make sure you wear your best power suit, Lena.”

As Lena walked out of the conference room, her phone buzzed.

It was a text from an unknown burner number.

Unknown: Let’s talk, Lena. Name your price. Don't ruin us.

Lena stared at the screen, a cold, triumphant smile touching her lips. She didn't reply. She simply blocked the number, walked over to her desk, and picked up her phone to dial the only man who had ever truly stood by her.

“Noah?” she answered as soon as he picked up.

“Len? You okay? Your voice sounds different.”

“I’m better than okay,” she said, her heart soaring as she looked out the window at the bright Charlotte skyline. “Are you free tonight? I need you to help me take down an empire.”
