The weekend passed in a blur of encrypted emails, midnight forensic accounting sessions with Chloe, and strategic briefings with federal investigators.

Derek Mallory, blissfully unaware that the ground beneath his feet had completely dissolved, spent the weekend trying every desperate trick in the book. He sent flowers to Lena’s apartment (which she immediately threw into the dumpster without opening). He left frantic voice messages claiming it was all a "misunderstanding" and that he loved her. And finally, by Sunday night, his tone shifted from pleading to outright threatening.

Lena ignored every single one of them.

She spent Sunday evening at Noah’s house, sitting on his living room floor surrounded by blueprints, financial disclosures, and takeout pizza boxes.

Noah was pacing the hardwood floor, running a hand through his hair, looking more stressed than Lena had ever seen him.

“Len, are you sure about this?” Noah stopped pacing, looking down at her with intense, protective worry in his hazel eyes. “If Derek is as desperate as you say, and federal agents are moving in during a public board meeting... it’s going to get messy. I don't want you anywhere near the fallout.”

Lena looked up from her laptop, setting her slice of pizza down on the coffee table. She stood up, walking right up to him until she was close enough to feel the steady heat radiating from his chest.

“Noah Camden,” she said softly, reaching up to gently cup his jaw just as he had done to her days before. “For five years, I let a man make me feel small because I thought love had to be difficult, dramatic, and painful. I spent my whole life chasing storms when all I ever really wanted was a safe harbor.”

Noah’s breath hitched. His hands came up instinctively, resting softly on her waist. “Lena...”

“I’m not running from storms anymore,” she whispered, her eyes locked onto his. “And I’m not afraid of Derek. Not when I have you standing beside me.”

Noah didn't wait. He pulled her flush against his chest and captured her lips in a kiss that was fierce, passionate, and filled with ten years of unspoken longing. It wasn't loud or performative like Derek’s kisses; it was solid, grounding, and absolute.

When they finally broke apart for air, both of them smiling against each other’s lips, Noah rested his forehead against hers.

“Monday morning,” Noah murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “We walk into that meeting together. And after it’s over, we’re having dinner. Real dinner. No phones, no emergencies, no crises.”

“It’s a date,” Lena whispered.

Monday, 9:00 AM.

The main auditorium of the Brightwell Civic Trust was packed to capacity. Local business owners, journalists, municipal board members, and real estate developers filled the tiered seating.

At the front center table sat Derek Mallory, looking immaculate in his tailored navy suit, whispering confidently to his legal counsel. He looked calm, radiating the arrogant assurance of a man who believed his money and manipulation could buy anything.

Then the side doors opened.

Lena Hartwell walked in. She was wearing a sharp, tailored ivory blazer over a black silk shell, her hair pulled back into a sleek, commanding chignon. Her expression was serene, completely devoid of fear or hesitation.

Behind her walked Noah Camden, sitting in the first row of the gallery directly behind the board table, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes locked like a hawk on Derek Mallory.

Derek turned around, spotting Lena. A smug, condescending smirk touched his lips. He clearly thought she had reconsidered his offer and come to fast-track his zoning approval.

He raised an eyebrow as if to say, Good girl. You came to your senses.

Lena didn't even blink. She walked up to the podium, placed her folder down, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly at the head of the board.

“Good morning, members of the board,” Lena’s clear, resonant voice echoed through the silent auditorium. “Today, I am here to present an emergency motion regarding the suspension of Mallory Financial’s municipal development privileges—and to submit an unredacted federal audit revealing systematic embezzlement, wire fraud, and illicit coercion.”

Derek’s smug smirk vanished instantly. His face turned the color of ash.
